That's a nice idea it looks like it uses a torsion bundle for the power. Those are called onager's. To get much better range add asling to the end of the throwing arm, like a trebuchet, it will greatly improve performance.

I would personally love to make a semi-automatic, with an inch(ish) barrel and about 20 shots per refill, but I doubt that even coming close to the drawing board.

Great looking cannon, I think some fizzy drink bottles fit in 75mm 16bar pipe(the brits tennis ball pipe) so it might be worth a tr with your tennis ball pipe.
