does anyone know of a way to make heavy rifled slugs of a material that would do some damage?

lead? steel? epoxy?

You could build a forge and cast aluminum and iron.

Or you could just go with lead.

Won't work, the slug needs to be spinning before leaving the barrel.

As Nova said above, rifling a slug will have no effect on performance unless the barrel itself is rifled. What you want for a smoothbore barrel is to either move the centre of gravity forwards (a feature found on most shotgun slugs) or add fins or a tail.

well im looking for something with reasonable accuracy and a substantial amount of power (i wouldnt dare say hunting haha). is there any kind of fin or tail that could help me with accuracy and stable flight without slowing it down a whole lot?

Since its tail is hollow, it achieves stability by having a centre of gravity that is well towards the front. You can either cast lead slugs in this shape, or adapt the form to what materials you have at hand.

thank you jackssmirkingrevenge for all the information. its nice to get an straight helpful answer. i have just discovered an abundance of old 12 gauge foster slugs in my garage so id assume with some wadding they would make a nice projectile

12 gauge is slightly less than 3/4", so anything that fits in a shotgun barrel usually works well in launchers of similar calibre.

Twitch, if you can't cast lead directly then there are two basic ways to make aerodynamically stable slugs.

The first one works if you have some pipe that fits the barrel exacly (or almost, you can wrap it in duct tape till it's a snug fit) - cut it to about 4 times the calibre, then pack the front (about a calibre's length from the nose) with heavy material (epoxy, lead, plaster, whatever's cheap, sticky and available - note I said it must be heavy :p could also be a mixture, say lead pellets in a plaster matrix).

The second option, similar to a Brenneke type slug, is to have a heavy nose attached to a lighter tail. Nova used this system to good effect with his pimpin' ammo.

do u have any idea of the range or accuracy of these?

It depends heavily on the power of your launcher - if you're firing them at low velocity, the power will drop off quickly and you'll have a rainbow-like trajectory.

Assuming you have a reasonably powerful launcher (shooting at least at 500 feet per second), slugs that are a tight fit in the barrel and which are made consistently, a good sighting system and a consistent launcher, I would expect it to reliably hit a 6" circle at 50 yards.

I was thinking maybe you could find 12 guage shotgun shell slugs at a reloading supply store or sporting goods store......The slugs that 12 guage shotguns use has a sabot around it. but the slug is rifled or has a dart like fights behind it.....I never looked in to it but it sounds like it could work??? :salute:

also while the brenneke style slugs work great(i've taken two nice whitetails with them) the remington buckhammer is supposed to be the bees knees now.
