How would these steel balls be in a pneumatic cannon with a 1/2" barrel? Seems like that would be an awesome bullet.

Reminds me of the balls shot of out black powder rifles/muskets. Ya they would probably work well.

they will work very well, but be careful with ricochet. They will bounce back of any hard surface at almost the same speed.
I think they're quite expensive too.So if you shoot from a distance and loose them...you spent 6 bucks( and shipping) on 10 shots.

But that's up to you.
Tumbling won't be an issue with spherical ammo

You don't need high-quality steel spherical to 1 part in 20,000.
Check out mcmaster product number 96455K56 - 7.94$ for 100 balls.

That being said, you might not want to buy .5" balls, as that's .1" undersize in sch 40. Go with something a bit bigger. (pipe ID chart available here, mcmaster available here)

i'd be afraid of ricochets (i shoot in my basement most of the time) i would buy a musket ball mold and cast your own lead balls

it would be Extremely Dangerous not to mention you might even need to register it as a firearm (because it uses combustion) depending on state regulations......

No it would not be considered a firearm. And it wont be dangerous if you shoot safely.

Yes, lead can melt. It's a metal, and it actually has a pretty low melting point. They actually use it in solder.

Apparently Aluminum isn't a metal anymore (metalloid for all you sticklers out there :P ).

Steel ball bearings are good fun, but they do bounce back - but not actually fast enough to cause injury (or so I find).

They are among the few ammos actually capable of making holes in steel plates.

1. if you shoot it fast enough, it will not ricochet, it will go through the target, and not back at you.

2. once again, if you shoot just about any steel ammo fast enough, it will put massive holes in steel plates.

instead of bearings (I don't know how to get a hold of 2" ball bearings) I use steel slugs, like this one, and I have a couple weighing anywhere from 6-8 pounds. I put one through a car hood recently at 600+ yards.
