Ammo air plane

I am sure someones posted on it or tried it before ... sparked some ideas for me though. thought you guys might like it. could really get that plane flying with the right gun. what do you think ???

would have to reinforce it or keep the pressures low or else it be the same thing when i tried shooting nerf darts... they riped in half on the first shot

Yes and judging how this is in a combustion cannon board, there will be fire :lol: you better protect your styrofoam somehow.

There's this one UAV or something similar (my memory is a little fuzzy on this one), that pretty much folds its wings up into a cylinder around the fuselage (like a burrito). Could try shooting something like that and hoping it fires in the right config.

If you wanted to fire something like that specifically, I wouldn't. Just make something similar out of any foam tubing you find at home depot.

what about (kinda like Mishkan said) you had springloaded fins/wings that popped out when the plane/rocket left the barrel.

Yes, make sure the power isn't too high. I stuck one of those gigantic nerf rockets onto the end of my bolt-action 1" barrel, and it tore it apart at 80 psi.

You don't even need to make the fins spring loaded. Just have them fold FORWARD rather than backward and wind resistance (ie, drag) will deploy them for you.

Or, avoid having to fold the wings at all by putting the plane on the outside of the launch tube, like the photo in the original post.

For the fueselage you could use ...
* foam pipe insulation (ID's available only up to about 3/4"?)
* one of those foam pool toys, long brightly colored cylinder with a hole through the center (pretty small ID though, perhaps 3/4"?)
* the clear plastic flourescent tube protectors (~36" long and ~1.5" diameter?)
* a golf club protector tube (~36" long and 2" diameter?)

That though will open them as soon as drag is highest, ie when the aircraft leaves the barrel, and likely rip them off. Ideally in my view you want your projectile to remain in low-drag "folded" mode to conserve speed and achieve maximum altitude, then have its wings pop out.

As above, a fixed design would have to be made pretty strong to resist the launch (I'm assuming ridiculous launching pressures and velocities here since this is spudfiles and this is how we (barrel?) roll :D) - along the lines of the sort of catapult glider launched by rubber bands, and even some of these use folding wings for high performance as the increase in weight and complexity is compensated for by the higher ceiling achieveable.

Now just add a nose camera with a transmitter and some radio-controlled control surfaces, and you have your very own guided missile launcher. That almost certainly won't work.
