im planning on making a sabot round for my cannon and heres what im planning on doing. my cannon has a 2 inch barrel, i want the sabot to be maybe 5 inches long so im going to get a piece of 2 inch PVC and fastening it vertically on top of a wooden board... then im going to get that expanding foam stuff and spray a tiny bit in the bottom, then put in the ammo...and spray a bit more on top... then after it expands/hardens it should form a nice cylinder upon removal from the piece of PVC ... then i flatten either side...cut it in half...re insert the ammo...close it up and carve a concave shape on the front.. so when it is fired the halves will fall away and the ammo will keep flying.... using the expanding foam... will it work? and is it light weight?

It should work for a few shots anyway. Im not sure how strong that foam stuff can get but it might just disenigrate when fired. And why would you need a sabot in front of the ammo?

Wellll yes and no, it all depends on the type of foam you get the crap I had, can’t for the life of me remember what the make and model on it was, didn’t work at all. Problems that may occur:

• 1.the foam stick to the mold no mater how much WD-40 you use
  2.the inside may still be slimy when you go to take it out.
  3.if it sets up wrong one end, or possibly both, will be concave, in your case that’ll be a good thing.

But if you get it to work it’ll make a good sabot.

The hardened foam is lightweight and carves easy with a razor knife. Talkcum powder would probly keep it from sticking to the pvc. The one thought i have about it is, keeping the two halfs even as the cannon gets fired. You could pin the halfs.

It won't work too well, sorry to be a pessimist but it works on contact with air, and when you seal the bottom, that restricts its access, and the sides aren't permeable so it wouldn't work too well.

The yellow is the form, the gray the cavity for the projectile, the red is the slice, and the brown is a corrugated cardboard disk.
The foam is sliced and then glued to the cardboard disk

Judgement thats not making much sense to me. If the halves are glued to the cardboard then there is a good chance the ammo wont even leave the sabot and the whole thing will be gone, unless thats the point of it.

Any sabot i ever seen only incases the bottem half of the projectile, it's a useable design, but i don't think it would be consistently the same shot after shot. It would shoot as wildly as the 1" super balls i 've shot, one curves off the the right, the next one travels straight away, then curves straight up! The unknown makes it fun!

yea thats the exct design i would use but without the cardboard ...maybe a layer of plastic could be put in the PVC tube to keep it from sticking to it?

Most sabots are not reusable, as a mater of fact I can’t recall ever hearing of a reusable sabot. The cardboard is used to keep the whole thing together the round will still separate unhindered. I’ve done my research I know what I’m talking about.

oooOOOOoooohhh !!!!! .... 69 cents for a 2X6 sabot ?? im buying it ... and ... how come they arent re-useable?? i figured i could just pick up the two pieces and use it again

I still dont get the point of having part of the sabot in front of the ammo. What purpose does having some in the front serve?

the part of the sabot on front of the ammo i think ur talking is the concave part?? ... thats so that when it exits the barrel the sabot splits apart and falls while the projectile keeps flying

That will work at lower pressures, higher pressures will shred the foam. good luck.
