Hello All,

It's been a while, first of all. I sadly haven't done much spudding lately, due to my ongoing studies in electrical engineering (wohoo!). I do have a cannon to post when it works finally, but alas I digress....

As some of you at college may know, living with a roommate has some serious pros and cons. Luckily, I only have one con with my roommate this year; He likes to go to bed at 2am, I like to go to bed at 11pm. He likes to wake up 2 minutes before class, and I like to wake up at 7am.

So I ask you all, How would you deal with this? My current plan is earplugs, but I know that my alarm won't wake me up in the morning, and it will end up waking up my roommate before it wakes me. I'm beginning to think wiring up a dog shock collar or something is a good idea...

Just figured it would be an interesting problem to solve.

I had the same problem last semester, but my roommate would stay up til 5 or 6 when I had class at 7:30 every morning. I use earplugs since they manage to fall out by the time my alarm goes off. You could also talk to him or your RA.
The other option is waging all out war but that's only if you know he sucks.

I apologize, I accidentally posted this from an account I accidentally made. from now on VH_man is equal to Schematicsman....

Regardless, he's one of my good friends, and he tries VERY hard to be quiet. Its just It takes alot of quietness for me to fall asleep.

Also, I have special earplugs that are designed to comfortably fit during sleep. they just work too well.

rubber strap, cell phone.

Attach the cell phone to your leg or arm, set an alarm on your phone to vibrate. Noise is not the only thing that can wake people. If your phone does not vibrate enough for your liking, you could always make a pneumatic ram with a pillow on the end of it to nudge you awake.

or if you want to make it smaller, you could hook up your ear plugs to strings, and have a motor wind the strings back after a certain time of sleeping. This way your alarm wakes you up with noise if thats an absolute must.

Just to please SB15...

Might I suggest a large advanced high energy hybrid as a means of waking you up?

tell the guy that you'll be using it as long as he feels it's okay to keep you up... :D

Seriously though...you're probably better off finding another room...or roommate.

A little out of date, but I had a tape player with a clock function. I could set it to turn on the radio or play a tape. I used to cue up Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. There is a track that starts with a wind up alarm clock going off. It goes nuts from there. Never could sleep through that, especially if I turned it up a little. The modern version are clocks with iPod docks. I hate those because they become useless as soon as someone takes the iPod. I tried to find a clock radio MP3 player, but they seem to be non-existent. A bigger amp and speakers than a simple cell phone is a plus. My boom box was 25 watts of boom.

Wear a pair of earphones to sleep, plugged into an ipod/phone. They'll block a fair bit of noise, and you could listen to some music quietly before sleeping. Plus, you wouldn't miss your alarm.

Not that I'd recommend it but I used a program that would play a preset MP3 on my computer at a preset time.

This is good and all if you chose to play it through headphones (and would essentially do the same thing as a phone can now a days...) but I chose to play it through 4 12" sub woofer's and 6 auxiliary speakers all set to 11 as a joke one time to wake my roommate up.

Needless to say it worked, and it also woke up our neighbors, to the sides top and bottom lol.

The only thing I have against ear buds and sleeping is they can get pretty damn uncomfortable unless you have a REALLY nice pair. The newer "Hipster" style aka rebirth of the "over-the-ear" style headphones may be a lot more comfortable, but if you roll over at all that would be like sleeping on a brick. I took apart a set of headphones ones and retrieved just the speakers and then sewed them into a beanie style hat for a skiing headset, before all the new jackets with them came out, and that was ideal to sleep with for an alarm because everything was fairly low profile and not jabbing me.

I think every one is going about this the wrong way, why should you change to suit him? I think you need to make it unbearable for him to live with you.
