I am in the need of a new phone:( mattyzip) feel free to have some imput

I was wondering what you guys think is the best route
i dont like apple, but i can get a iphone 4s for 40 bucks along with the plan

but i want something other then apple products: my limit is about 100 bucks,it has to be supper quick and reliable,
i cant afford the galaxy, but the galaxy note dont look all that bad

Galaxy S2 if you can afford it. I'm on a $50 a month plan for it, I drop it every day, and it's still going strong. Fantastic screen, good battery life, easily rooted, powerful processor, camera is great for a phone (pic related), massive amount of accessories, everything is damn good.

The S2 is capable of very vivid photos though. I still use a budget android, but my sister wanted a better phone for Christmas so I advised her to ask my parents for an SII. She's very happy with it.

Just buy a iPhone 3GS or 4 secondhand, you can get them pretty cheap. I bought a 3GS secondhand a year ago and I'm fairly happy with it. I hate Apple and all its nuances but the phone is quick enough for most things, is reliable, and still has some good features.

Otherwise I'd suggest a budget Android. I wouldn't recommend going on a plan unless you really need to use up all the phone minutes and data. At least with a secondhand iPhone you know what you're going to get and that it will work when you need it.

If you can't afford to spend more than $100 on a phone, I don't see why you would want to go on a $40 plan. Either save up more money or buy a cheap Android/iPhone.

I think you're better off buying a not too expensive android phone, only thing you'll need to pay attention to is the internal storage of the phone.
If you have too little (150 mb or so) it will fill up very quickly, making the phone unable to perform even the simplest tasks, even when cleaning it up very regularly.

They just make things easier. I don't play many games or anything on the phone but all these apps listed below have been quite useful over the past year:
Google maps (need directions to drive somewhere/locate a store)
Mendeley (syncs journal articles from my computer to my phone)
Chrome (syncs my laptop Chrome bookmarks/history with my phone)
WhatsApp (much cheaper than sending txts, especially internationally)
Vodafone (top up online/change my account settings on the go)
GMail (read/send/draft emails on the go)
Google Calendar (syncs with my laptop calendar)
Skype (similar to WhatsApp but sometimes more useful)
Australia/NZ GPS navigation (basically makes my phone a NavMan)
Auckland University app
MAXX (public transport app)
NextFerry (public transport app)
TuneInRadio (listen to radio from around the world over the internet)
Traffic AKL (traffic updates/cameras)
FeeddlerRSS (syncs my laptop RSS feed with my phone)

And that's really just the tip of the iceberg, there are many more apps that I use less regularly but serve their purpose when they are needed. It's basically a computer in your pocket, why not take advantage of such a device?

Don't be fooled by the media, not everyone uses iPhones to take photos of their food and share it with the world. To be honest, I didn't feel like I needed a smart phone until I actually bought one as I was quite happy with my old crappy old Sony Ericsson with a tiny screen.

The pics are washed out because of a 110F day, and residing in my pocket for several hours. Sweat tends to do that to lenses. It was pretty bright outside, and the flash might have been on too, not sure.

I had a Samsung clamshell for years before I bought a crappy Android, which I replaced after a year. A solid well known android will serve you well, and be nearly indestructible. The main problem with iphones the how fragile the screens are, Samsung use gorilla glass, which is made by Bomex. Anyone who's used Bomex glassware a lot can say how rugged it is.

Any Samsung android will serve you pretty well, they get down to $99 here.

For me, there is only one phone OS I can recommend, Windows phone. and I have a few reasons for it

Everything is so seamless for me on my phone. whatever I need to do, its either at my start screen or 2 clicks away, I get what I need quickly and with no fusses. And the UI is just incredible, almost every app is designed with the same theme as the phone which is no minimize excess "chrome" and focuses on the content, the real reason you use the phone. (this styles makes the phone very beautiful also)

the speed always amazes me, no mater what task I am doing, I can do it in less than half the time my buddies with androids and iPhones take. Battery life is another thing for me, I go work my 14 1/2 hour shift and when I come home, I'm still at around 80% battery.

The price are sure cheap where you guys live, I knew stuff were cheap in the US, never throught it would come down to this low >.> I paid 300 euro for my Sony Ericsson Xperia arc s... And it's Vodafone blocked ( I can only use Vodafone SIM cards ). With this phone (android 4.0.1) I almost eliminated the need of my laptop, I can manage my YouTube accounts, Facebook page easily, automatic email receiving (from 4 different email accounts I have) and can synchronize all my contacts of Skype, Facebook with my phone contacts also fill the calendar with birthday of my friends, etc. But any good android should do the job, my sure saved me a lot of time. If you are not planing on running heavy apps, a cheaper Samsung will do fine.

I'v had a iphone 3g, 3gs and 4 so far they have never let me down the 3g and 3gs are much tougher but with a good silicon case the 4 is solid to iv dropped my easily once a day for 5 months with no issue.

Never crashed or had problems with build quality, the battery life is far better then Samsung s2, my last all day and i use it for a calculator at work all the time!

If I just continually browse on my phone, I get 5 hours. In ausual day for me, I put my phone on the charger at 35%, that's after half an hour browsing, around an hour of calls, and fuck knows how many texts.

Not bad life I reckon. And they're easy and legal to root, unlike Iphones.
