Trust you to put all our efforts to shame looking forward to the video

Should look amazing!
It's times like this when I don't mind being completely upstaged
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

For what it's worth....
Here's the camera that was used.

(and it looks like I misquoted the specs.... 1024x1000 resolution at 7500 frames per second...)

Haha, reading through the specs reveals one major hurdle for a consumer camera ever hoping to get anywhere close as far as capabilities go... Even with 8gb of memory you can only record for a few seconds or less. The amount of data that these cameras can process is absolutely mindblowing...

And 5-10 years ago if I had fed you the specs of the Casio line used for most of this thread you would have had a similar reaction. No, it's not the electronics that make that camera beyond the reach of the consumer; it's the glass. But that's OK. As the Casios show, just because you don't have great glass doesn't mean you don't have "good enough" glass. As for the "electronics based" specs... If there's a consumer market, I predict the camera will come. Moore's Law and all that.Insomniac wrote:Haha, reading through the specs reveals one major hurdle for a consumer camera ever hoping to get anywhere close as far as capabilities go... Nice videos as always but this was 10 times more amusing:
Reminded me of the ultra dumbed-down Braniac's things - but very slowly segment

Haha.... I never really liked Braniac... some of the bits were cool but it always seemed like the producers were thinking 'Hmm... Mythbusters is popular, and it usually has a couple of explosions... I know! Let's have a show filled with nothing but gratuitous explosions!'
That and the fact they faked their alkali metals test
EDIT:
A click beetle just landed on the wall right next to the computer...

I can't stand watching it personally, it's incredibly patronising and aimed at the lowest possible denominator, no offence to the Yanks but I was amazed to see it from a UK as opposed to a US show (usually it works the other way round, like the Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard Wars comparison).
Love the beetle shots, what luck!

This little spider has been living on our window for about 5 months or so now (it is trapped between the fly-screen and the window glass, and it spends its time catching the tiny insects which can climb through the mesh, attracted by the house lights. Its fairly small now (its legs span about 4.5cm across) but it is a huntsman spider, so depending on the particular species it may well grow to be MUCH larger. I think its limited food supply of the bugs small enough to fit through the mesh may be limiting its size.
Unfortunately, moths can't fit through the mesh so its attempts in the vids are pretty futile.

Here they don't grow more that around 1cm, that's actually quite big! No chance of lifting up the mesh and chucking a few moths into the arena?Insomniac wrote:Its fairly small now (its legs span about 4.5cm across)

Haha, here the spiders smaller than 1cm are the exception rather than the norm Huntsman spiders can grow pretty massive (over 15cm across), and this coupled with their ability to run really fast means they have a nasty habit of scaring the pants off people.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:Here they don't grow more that around 1cm, that's actually quite big! I did actually feed it some moths yesterday because I felt sorry for it For some reason though, once on the inside the moths stay still and the spider seems to have great difficulty recognising them as food unless they move... One was sitting litterally 5mm away from the spider's leg, and it was only when it moved that the spider grabbed it. Didn't get that on film though.

Revived my old electrolysis rig to film some hydrogen and oxygen going 'Pow!'
First two videos are pretty self explanitory, the third one is a small balloon under a soda can, and the last one is a small amount of hydrogen inside a chamber being ignited, and then escaping through a small metal nozzle. As you can hopefully see in the freeze-frame from the video, it looks like there were shock diamonds formed for a fraction of a second. I'm not too sure if that actually is what happened, or if it's just an optical illusion, but it sure looks cool!

EDIT: Hmm, bit hard to see the 'shock diamonds' in the pic, I'll mess with the colours and make it a bit more obvious.
