A very good .22 in my opinion is the ruger 10/22 carbine. Marlin also makes some pretty nice .22s, and most of them are pretty decently priced.

If it is just for target shooting then get a walmart special, i dont think it really matters how nice the gun is if your just going to target shoot
yes tompson center makes a great .22 rifle. my brother and i where snpieing out 1 inch fragemants of clay pigons form 60 or 70 yard (with his new leopold scope ) the gun is very reliable semi, all made in america and very nice plinking gun. the only down side it that it is very accurate so it is designed not to fit a cheap 20$ .22 scope you have to get at least a 7x zoom scope and that could cost about $150+. i know you said you dont want it for hunting but is probably the best gun ive ever used for squirrel hunting.

walmart doesnt have them any more, at least mot my walmart.
dont get marlin, i hear that they used stamped parts rather than forged parts. i held one and it had a skinny wimpy barrel.
ruger 10/22 is a good one. its around $200. 10 shot semi-auto. from what i hear, i basicly never jams.
i personally have a Remington 597 .22 LR. its great. it too is semi auto and fires 10 shots per clip. it is really heavy duty. the barrel is really heavy and thick for a .22, which is very good because it helps with accuracy. it has very nice sights. it is a sweet shooting gun and i highly recommend it. its like an m16, keep it clean and it will work great. it was about $180, but i got it on sale a week later for only $150
the only thing about my 597 is that about every couple hundred shots it gets a stove pipe, but that is no big deal because it is cleared in about 5 seconds.

I have a Ruger 10/22 and I have put prob upwards of 2000 shots through and never had a problem with it. Get a nice exteneded clip and a new stock and or a scope.
Except if you live in New Jersey you cant have an extended clip because it is bad, bad, bad. Fucking Government.,

You can also get an "Eagle" 50 shot mag for pennies. Cheap plastic but they feed pretty fast and hold more shots than you'll ever use up, unless you get trigger happy.

Get a Henry H001 lever-action rifle or a marlin model 60.
Are you plinking or “target” shooting, if you’re just plinking get a Henry or a 60, if your one of those “bench rest” target shooters get a 60, more accurate than the 10/22 out of the box.
In defense of the 60, it’s not stamped, and is far more accurate out of the box than the 10/22.
I’ve heard from people that own both the model 60 and the 10/22, and they say that even after spending upwards of $600 on aftermarket modds for their 10/22 and their stock 60 shoots just as well.
If it were me I’d just get a Henry, actually I got one, but I’d get another in .22wmr.

Ruger all the way is what I have to say,my personal favorite brand of rifle. My favorite is by far the .243 Ruger M77,but that's a little more powerful then a .22 .
I might suggest a .22 magnum rifle as there is the extra power if you do decide to do a bit of hunting and the ammo is cheap.

According to the Russians, 22LR is more than enoughrna_duelers wrote:I might suggest a .22 magnum rifle as there is the extra power if you do decide to do a bit of hunting and the ammo is cheap.

And what do you mean by accurate? A .22 wont have the power to go that far accurately so one rifle to another is gonna be pretty close. And at 50 or so yards my 10/22 is dead on, with no upgrades except for a scope.
