Well starman, i believe i would be better of with the real stuff. But seeing as how i am make a very tiny gun i believe the mouse pad will do just fine. Also i do no have plumbers grease and i am really building this with left over pieces and money from my change jar, so i would rather not purchase much for the gun. Its just something for me to become acquainted with pistons.
Also, would vaseline be a workable substitut for plumbers greas?

Yeap, Vaseline is close to the consistancy of plumbers grease. Even a little motor oil could also do the trick.iisthemuffin wrote:Well starman, i believe i would be better of with the real stuff. That's fine on the mouse pad material, if it works for you, that's great. I could see it being more successful on small pistons rather than larger 2" or greater ones. The real stuff from Mcmaster isn't terribly expensive so it might be nice to have some on hand, next time you make an order there and have a few extra $$.

Yea. I will deffinetely be investing in some real neoprene when i make my real coaxial. Like i said, im just building this one to get the concept down before i jump into building a larger one.
AHA!! I got a seal! I havent built it yet but i put my barrel down one end with an oring to seal, dropped my piston in and blew as hard as i could. No leakes! And i dont even have vaseline on yet. YAY!
Would the vaseline go on the sealing face?

I had figure neoprene would be softer since so many people reccomend it as such a good sealing face.
I mean this in a very respectful way: I kind of like having a girl around here. Not in a flirting sense or snything though. More because its kind of like a motherly thing you know. Instead of pointing out the engineering involved and what not, you point out the fact that its cute and inventive. In a way this is something i would expect a mother to say. Its nice.HOW INVENTIVE!
very creative, and resourceful.
I like it, it's really cute
And PLEASE do not get me wrong. I do not mean to offend you or demean you because you are a girl. I have no doubt you will find your way around a spudders workshop in no time. Actually seems as though you can already.
Thank you:D
Yes if you even need it. However, it won't hurt to apply a thin layer on there even if you're getting a seal without it.iisthemuffin wrote: Would the vaseline go on the sealing face?

Im not completely sure what your talking about. If your talking about what happened with pocket then i am not "playing a mod". I was voicing my opinion. And in no way do i consider my self a mod. I am here to learn, and at first i had thought that zach12 was as well.SpudFarm wrote:i think muffin should stop playing a mod.
and i have talked about the "gun" already
But, if this is not what you are refering to, then i am completely lost.

Well if you feel the need to say that then i take back what i had said to pocket. Im sorry if i mistook his comment as rude and unhelpful.
Just wanted to let you know Sandman, Chapstick Assasain made it into my favorite's bookmark list...cool idea and build.
However, I do wish the detail photos were clearer. Is there anyway to retake those? Put your camera in close up/macro mode, probably is the flower symbol on your mode switch.
The stuff you put here in Spudfiles becomes your permanent record you know...

I understand that pocket. Thats why i said i mistook it. Because at first i had thought you were being rude. I now see why you had said what you did.pocket wrote:i said that comment because there are hundreds of threads that explain how a pilot works so i was saving others time in explaining it the 1000000000 time

this thread is kinda getting off topic. but just to le ya know im not "playing a mod" by the way starman i cant promise any good pics my dig camera is broken.
i dont get how that would work seeing as atmospheric pressure is 14.7psi... can someone explain?jonnyboy wrote:
I would be scared to fire it higher than 5 psi for fear of failure.
Hmm wonder if chapstick would split or fragment.
it is actually pretty strong i made 2. the first one was a safety one and it blew up at 13 psi and split in half.
Atmospheric pressure is 14,7 psi but this is absolute pressure.
Because this pressure is both on the in and outside of anything, the difference in pressure is zero. Unless you suck something vacuum or pump air inside, there is no pressure differential and thus there is no resulting force to blow your chamber.
The difference in pressure is the actual pressure people talk about when they say "there is xx psi in my chamber".
So 13 psi is 13+14,7 psi absolute pressure. To tell the difference between absolute pressure and differences in pressure, absolute pressure is written as: xx psia
