It's tapered to ensure the seal. Using a bit of PTFE you can screw it in nice and tight and get a good seal.

It starts small so is guaranteed to fit, then get bigger and bigger to fill the female thread.

@covey12: No it isn't, it had a lot of problems for a while and then went down altogether. That's why spudfiles got new sponsors.
