You like those cheesy Sci-Fi movies where the bad guy names his devious contraption some corny name? Well... this isn't Sci-Fi but this is pretty cheesy. Meet the:
Battle Exhaust Air Releaser (and 667 because it's not quite the beast, but the neighbor of the beast. w00t Iron Maiden \m/:twisted: )
Assembled in about 30 minutes, most of the parts are from Lowe's or Mcmaster. The scope was a very late addition, mounted on it about 30 minutes ago. This is my second launcher, my first being a ball valve pilot pvc gun. Feels great going from barely accurate and leaking at 40 psi to shooting dead on target 25 (yeah that's right ) meters away, and nailing that 3" nail in 1 inch into the wood.
The QEV, when it arrived, wouldn't seal. I pumped for 5 minutes, heard air leaking from the barrel. I disassembled it, and stared at it for a while. After remembering what BTB told me a few days ago (thanks ) I put a spring between the half I took off and the piston, to provide that little bit of more pressure that the piston needs to seal correctly. (This later failed again, and I just put 2 springs in it, 1 inside the other. Works great so far. Also, if I tap the schrader fill valve on the pilot side, this thing is a good semi auto. Again, thanks BTB)
Still reading?
Specs:
-3/4" QEV (overkill on a .5/.25 pipe gun IMO)
-1/4" pilot trigger
-1/2" barrel
-10" long, 2" PVC chamber. No DWV this time, learned my lesson when the first blew up. Planning on making a chamber that resembles stock, so I can put it up against my shoulder for stability and more comfort. This one works great as a monopod though, the center of balance is right in front of the chamber.
-breach loading, just a cutaway on the pipe, 2.5" long going down the the center of it. 1/2" repair pipe over it, perfect airtight seal. Slide to open, load projectile, slide to close.
-scope. Used one of the dove rings from the scope and screwed it onto the pipe-female fitting soldered onto the barrel. Then, took a nut ant screwed it into where you would screw the rail on. Screwed the other one onto it, and taped the other end to the QEV with some nuts under it to keep it level. Very sturdy, and didn't need any sighting in.
Pictuuuuuuures:
Beware, some were taken with the crappy 2mp phone, some with the 12 mp camera.
The entirety of it
Pilot side.
Taped trigger inside 3/4" pvc pipe for comfort, works great. Looks.. eh not so much.
Breech slide closed.
Breech slide open.
Chamber/side view.
Scope mounting.
I had this before I had the scope on, my "Iron" sights. By the muzzle is my also ghetto muzzle break/silencer. Will upgrade it very soon.
Aha, shot looking down the scope. Actually took me a few takes to get this right, because in order to see clearly from the scope you need to be the perfectly right distance away from it. About 2 inches.
Bike pump, 10 pumps to 60, a lot more to 120.
The usual ammo. A 3" nail inside a plastic twist-on wire cap. Dunno the model, but it fits great in 1/2" copper. Near perfect seal. Excuse the quality and shadow please
DAMAGE
Plastic caps broke off the nail after they hit the wood, penetrate about 1/4" inch and then shatter. Nail went right through. Again, with phone.
Would love to hear your comments, questions, concerns, criticism, suggestions, and anything of the sort, please!

pretty good 2nd gun, I don't know why more people don't use QEVs on beginner cannons, in my opinion they can be just as, or easier than modifying a sprinkler valve.
This cannon does have room for improvement though, an all metal chamber, a cleaner breach, and a solid scope mount. All in all, this is a good cannon

Think you'd be pleased if you replaced the chamber with 1.5" or 2" galvanised iron pipe and fittings about 10-12" long. That's all you'll need with such a short barrel. Plus you can go to high pressures, a lot higher.
Nice build though. Not bad for a second.

Looks good. Kinda ghetto... It you worked at it a little more you could make it look really nice.
Oh and LnL- most beginners don't use we've cuz they have to order them. I used to use sprinklers cus I could just go to lowes and pick one up, no. To mention they're cheaper...

Looking good but it seems a shame to have a PVC chamber on it, I would go with a smaller metal one and crank up the pressure

Thanks for all the comments.

Thanks for the advice, I'll get to work on all of it now. Solid scope mount as in a hose clamp?
MrCrowley
The chamber is already 2" by 10", what would be the benefit of having it out of Iron rather than PVC? the pressure it can go to... but all I have is my bike pump, no compressor. They're all +$100 it seems, and a shock pump would take ages, but that will be the next pump that I get. I wasn't sure how high the 125 psi rated QEV could go, what do you think?

What can I do to make it look better? tape off and a better looking chamber?
Spudders
Thank you Private Spudders.

Thank you, but I have no way of getting higher than 125
I'll be getting a shock pump soon, but AutoZone has a pump that can go to 300 psi. Seeing it's 12 volt, it would probably take forever. Any other options? paintball c02? regulator setup costs a loooot

You could have a 10" x 1 1/4" galv. chamber, wouldn't make much difference. I have a similar sized chamber as that and I can pump to 300PSI in a minute with a track pump. Most compressors only go to 125PSI anyway.
My 260PSI track pump cost me like $30US and with such a short barrel you really don't need so much chamber volume.

I've posted this in several threads, halving the chamber volume and doubling the pressure will give you significantly better performance.Fish8myb8 wrote:Yeah I remember reading a thread saying that lower chamber volume and higher PSI is either better or just as good.
