So why does your mother have a sprung latch with a key slot on both sides?
If it's not sprung how was it locked with the key on the inside?
If it is sprung with a key slot both sides it can happen again, replace it with a nightlatch which only needs a key from the outside. From the inside its a knob or lever operated by hand.
