teflon will do the job indeed. Use a lot, so screwing goes heavy. Then it seals of greatly.

NOOO. Teflon should start 2 threads up from the end of the fitting.

Wraps for the size of pipe:
1/16"-3/8"- 2-3 wraps
1/2"-1" - 4-6 wraps
1 1/4" and up- up to 10 wraps
