Heilum tanks

[WOW!!]

I was getting some stuff at Party city yesterday and I noticed that they have the helium tanks for filling up ballons. Now what about useing one for a spudgun? You can prob do something with the threads to hook it up. And its like $25 for a big tank that will fill 50 big ballons.

yeah you could proberly use it as a storage tank for compressed air for your cannon? and yes most gass/pressureized air fittings would be compatable.

Better use it with helium, as a lighter gas than air it allows higher velocity to be obtained if everything else is equal, indeed it's much easier to go supersonic with helium.

Yes that would be good to but i was thinking along the lines of budget helium would't be all that cheap to re fill. Oh hang on that is the hire price of the tank? or is that purchise price of empty used tank?
If a hire price then yes he helium would be sweet to run!

i've seen the small helium tanks that they sell at Target, which would require some welding, but if you mean the huge 4 foot tall tanks, that would be awsome.

If you fire a cannon using helium does it make a high pitched bang?
Also, has anyone ever played a wind instrument after inhailing helium?

It will work, but you aren't going to get many shots out of it. The bigger sized tanks around around 300 psi and the smaller ones are a little higher, can't remember exactly.

Unless they've changed the valves since the last time I looked at them, you can just cut the end off of it and tap it for 1/8" NPT so it just becomes a nice tank x NPT adapter.

I think they have helium tanks (the big ones) for inert gas welding, if you look around. It's bound to be a lot less expensive than the party warehouse stuff. Even then, I'd use it specifically for a high performance cannon for chronying and stuff, if you're not going for muzzle velocity, CO2 is far cheaper.

The reason i said it was it is $25 for the tank, which would be good for takeing some phenumatics on the road o use, and when you are done you probly could use it for a air storage tank. And when you are done you just throw them away.

I dont know if you can get them refilled or not. I might by one this weekend because I am going to my Dad's house. I will get some video of it.

^ no the sound waves travel a higher frequencies or some thing like that...so I'd assume the bang would be higher pitched.

Yes, a gun fired with Helium will give a higher pitched bang.

An instrument played with a breath of Helium will also be higher pitched. (How much higher depends on the details of the instrument and how big a "breath" is. Almost no affect on the pitch of a flute. Big affect on the pitch of a trumpet if a "breath" has enough gas to flush the air out of the instrument.)

Helium does not affect the vocal cords. It can't, helium is a noble gas and short of an atomic event does not participate in chemical reactions.

Helium raises the pitch of your voice because the lower density increases the speed of sound in your throat which in turn changes the resonance frequence of your pipes.
