Hello,
Does anybody know what pressure is required to fire a .177 pellet through a rifled barrel (with decent speed).
thanks

How long is a piece of string??? There are a few un-known factors for us to give you a good answer.

it is lot different than that!
Some guns use 80 bar, others 30 bar. But they dont practicly shoot with 80 bar cause it doesn't use all the air into the valve.
others without regulators use directly 200-250 bar to shoot, but also the pressure that gets behind of the pellet is less.
for low pressures, much air volume is needed to shoot. for higher pressures, less . So i think a cheep spring air rifle shoots @30-40 bar. but also i seen here on spud files some penetration tests at 50 bar that are far better than most PCP i seen. So it's all about the volume of air you let to hit the pellet.
COnclusion: make it and test it !

As jrrdw says, this is a
very vague question.
Depends on how much force is needed to swage that pellet through that barrel, depends how long the barrel is, depends how large the chamber is, depends on the valve flow and response, depends what "decent speed" means, depends what your pellet mass is...
For a very vague figure, you're probably looking in the region of about 500-600 psi, but any of the above factors could shift that by a factor of two or more in either direction!

im not sure if this would help you, but i was shooting .22 with 30-15 bars, and i used 11.7 grain pellets. They pierced trough tin can at 20 m (except the last shots at 18-15 bars)

A factor everybody seems to overlook is: What will be the chambervolume??

Pressure = Power
As much as you can.
