An idle thought that is basically the unholy marriage of a nailgun and paintball marker:

Image

The benefit is that it will fire whatever fits in the barrel and it doesn't need to be airtight, indeed it could be fed though a hopper of shot of whatever size doesn't fall though the detents at the breech. The disadvantage is that the projectile can only go as fast as the piston, meaning that arresting it would be a significant engineering challenge for something with decent ballistic performance.

Potential for quiet launching of very heavy projectiles

Indeed, noise abatement is one of the consequences of allowing the gasses room to expand before exiting to the atmosphere.

How do you make the animations? Like which software.

It's actually quite a primitive process, MS Paint and ezgif.com

I was having a bit of a think about this idea and it seems it could be greatly simplified and also made more efficient:

Image

The piston itself becomes the hammer that opens an inline balanced valve.

It is good simplification. I think that the stem that drives the projectile in his drawing, can do several other things, apart from what he proposes, such as compressing the mixture and at the end of the tour, activating an ignition, is just what comes to mind. The piston attached to the stem should be smaller to add more pressure than delivered on the larger piston than you draw.
In the piston stroke to the right, in the drawing, the mixture is sucked, when the valve lets compressed air pass, it moves to the left and the piston is blocked by the trigger mechanism, for the explosion. Then when you pull the trigger, it all happens again.

A different application from your idea.
The trigger you actually draw is the initiator of the recharge of the repeat hybrid. It is the mechanical locking of the piston, which allows it to move to the right, by the action of the spring, and then, to the left by the action of compressed air. To fire, the trigger is the piezoelectric.
What I have added is a "StrongBoy" type mono-pumped weapon with a side bb`s loading system.
The firing sequence is: Press the green "trigger", which you drew, and the weapon is traced, and then press the button on the piezo spark arrester, and firing occurs.
What I write is off topic, but it was just an idea.
With a 2 "piston in its design, and about 6 bar of air pressure, being the hybrid's piston 1.5 cm in diameter it can be compressed to about 68 X ... nI CRAZY WOULD USE THAT PRESSURE, but if you use less is feasible to work The part of the hybrid is proven and works well What you designed, I am totally sure that it works, for the clear and simple design.
I leave an adapted drawing, to explain better.

If the trigger sear left closed. (not catch piston)
Would it be automatic in action.?

Sorta thinking out loud.
Piston be generating air infront of it, as headed toward vavle. (Could be a positive)
Thinking hav to equate for that, with longer valve stem.
Then on return, the vent cop a double wanmmy.
Air generated from piston Oposing side.
Again from pressure side.

Some interesting thoughts!

My first reaction was "why use air to compress the system when you could use a spring?"

The advantage of using air could be that you could indeed achieve some tremendous gas mix pressures...

That is a very good point! As drawn the piston would probably never even reach the valve stem if it is air tight...
