Issue with a modded sprinkler valve

I just modified my first sprinkler valve and I am quite happy about it. It works very well with just one minor issue. When I fill it, it makes a honking sound and lets air out of the chamber for about 2-4 seconds. After that, the sound goes away and it works perfectly. I have read about sprinkler valves honking when opening, but not when filling. The honking also stops. Any help with this would be appreciated.

... are you kidding.
Read the sprinkler valve troubleshooting guide, it's stickied in the pneumatic cannon discussion section. I usually try to be nice about this sort of thing, but you didn't even need to use the search button to find what you need.

I did read the guide. I didn't see a part of it that answered the question. The honking is not caused when I open it. It is caused while filling. It only lasts a couple of seconds. It does eventually seal though. That is why I am unsure if it is the equalization hole. The guide made it seem as though it would not seal. Mine eventually does.

One of my guns did that and I found that the solution was to put a small ball valve on the air compressor hose that I use to fill the gun, that way I can open the valve slowly to give the air enough time to equalize.

Put a ball valve right before the sprinkler valve, open it after you have filled the gun. This will allow you insufficent pumping source to close the diaphram in the sprinkler valve instanty.

Basicly your not filling the gun fast enough or pressure is not equalizing correctly, this will solve your problom.

P.S. What are you filling it with-Bike pump?

I read the troubleshooting guide too....
I have a Hunter ICV 2" valve. It honks when releasing air.
I'm using a battery setup to power it. Seals fine, honks when solenoid is activated.

I read something about lithium grease. Should this be applied to the diaphragm.

A link or a non-sarcastic response would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Most sprinkler valves have small plastic tabs in their diaphragm. If you remove the diapghram, you can just pull it out. It looks like a little white thing. I had the same problem. I did this, and my problem was solved.

No luck in removing anything....I guess I'll try some grease, but I'm still trying to figure out what exactly the solenoid does to open the valve....maybe I'm missing an adjustment screw....

Mod the valve.
The solenoid sucks as a exaust.
With a 2" valve a ball valve may be needed.

AHHHH

The solenoid is the exhaust? Awesome.

1/4 valve good enough I'm assuming?

Okay, so no need for batteries!
Sheesh.....the answer was right here, but I just didn't understand the mod.

Thanks again and I REALLY appreciate the guidance.
I'll post pics when I get it done.
