Hey all, I’m going to make a combustion for making noise for new years, the
Forth-o’-July, and just about any other occasion, and I was wondering which would be louder?
A cannon made out of a scrap of 3”PVC, the scrap is about 2 feet long.
Or a cannon made out of 2”PVC about 5 feet
I know that the shorter the barrel the louder, so I plan on just stuffin the tater in the end of the pipe or just taping some aluminum foil over the end.
My logic says the 3incher would be best, but I thought I’d ask the experts(hard to keep a strait face thinking about that)

Yes it sounds newbish but hey it’s my first combustion, yell at me all you like and whoever makes me the maddest get an all-expense-paid trip to beautiful down range knob creek!

You were doing good untill that last crack about knob creek, the tighter you can keep the barrel blocked off, the louder it will be, (DHAAA!). The bad thing is, if you go about it that way, your working with a time bomb! Know what i mean?

You mean that if the spud’s in there to tight it could explode, so I need a barrel but a short one, with a projectile that fits tight but not so tight that it’ll explode, am I right?
Wait I thought a tater was suppose to fit tight…did I miss some thing?

Explosions in combustions are allways possible, you increase the chances when the tater fits to tightly. As far as explodeing goes, doesn't matter how long the barrel is.

Yea your rite.

No, you didn't miss anything.

Ok good didn’t think so but hey.
So do I need a barrel or not? Can I just stuff the tater in the end of the pipe?
And which would be better the 2inch or the 3inch?

I can only guess, but the smaller theq barrel diameter, the crackier the sound, the bigger the barrel diameter, the deeper the sound. The sound would probly carry futher with the small barrel, again i'm only guessing. I think up close, the bigger barrel would be louder.

Ok, I built a noisemaker just like the one you want to. It was a piece of scrap SCH40 1.5" ID pipe, glued a cap on one end, put a small hole (1/2") about 2" above the cap. Unroll several sheets of paper towel, cram them down about 3/4 of the way. Take a propane torch, minus the mixing nozzle, and put a 3 second charge in the hole, then touch a match or long-nose lighter to the hole and POW! Louder than what you would expect.

Make a regular combustion gun, but add a union on the breach end of the barrel so you can add a burst disc. This can be plastic from a 2 liter, aluminum foil, whatever. It will be loud, and it will improve performance of the gun.

if you have a deep wallet, you could buy a supah-valve (very loud)...
but you said comby so..
I would aim for either a crack that echoes satisfyingly, or a deep boom that shakes you bones. Anything in between is boring. Just play with barrel length/diameter. I personally would prefer a crack (you know, a lighter sound, but still loud) because it would carry farther. (I think)

My preference is the sound of a M.O.A.B.!(google it)
It’s my experience that a deep sound echoes farther than a crack.
A .22 goes “ka-pooow” well a .50 cal goes “KA-VOOM” and a 105mm howitzer goes “KA-BOOOOM”.
Yes that’s partially due to the charge behind them. But a .50-70 is louder than a .45-70.
In addition, when you fired a .22 it cracks but a 410bore thuds and echoes.

if you are looking for a low boom then go for a 5 ft long 2 inch barrel that has a reducer backwards on the end (widener i guess) ... it projects the sound plus if you use the right amount of fuel you can "out-bass" most sound systems

Well I was in home-cheapo a couple days ago and I had a brain fart, instead of stuffing a tater in the end I got a coupler and a plug. I’ll glue the coupler on the end of the pipe and stuff the plug in to the coupler. I’ll put an eye-bolt in the plug and have a string attached to it so I don’t lose the two dollar plug.
