The Hater Cannon :: My First Spud Gun
What's really funny is not the discussion of the cannon and results, but the combination of the discussion coupled with the NAME of the cannon...
<shrug> Just struck me as funny...edit:dammit, beaten by hubb
I say that a stiff tailwind, vicious backspin, and a relatively light (3oz) chunk o spud could go 1/2 mile, but it has more to do with wind and loft than gun performance... Thats not to say it isn't a good performer, but brute force required to send veggies(non-rinded varieties) over 1/2mile would prolly end not be able to be hand held by anyone other than the HULK...
Once again, Very Nice Cannon Guys...

1/2 mile off a combustion shooting a potato? THAT SUX!!
I can shoot a Canuter Valve off my '82 Chevy Ram F150 AT LEAST 3/4 Mile with 'ma cannon made of soup cans duct taped together, then I just squirt some bacardi 151 in the chamber and hold up my cigarrete lighta and WHOOSH! That thing flies at least 3/4 mile cause that's how far tha locals says it is from Uncle billy-joe-henry's barn to Farmer Henry-daniels-smith's barn. So if they say it's 3/4 mile I'm sure's to believe 'em! YEEE HAWWWWWW The south will Prevail!!!

That was just a wee bit uncalled for. More like sarcastically emulating the OP in the view of the people responding lol.
on another note, I'm pretty confident I've sent a full can of Mac 'N Beef close to 1/3 mile with 10 gallon, but that's a little more probable.

@jackssmirkingrevenge: Yes, I would suspect this is a case of error in measurement rather than deliberate attempts to mislead.
However, I can't say that the responses so far to doubters have given me the impression that any actual "proof" will be either forthcoming or genuine.
Truth be told, given my past experience in matters where sarcasm and implied insults are used towards detractors, I am not filled with any form of confidence that there would be no cover up of legitimate error in order to circumvent any necessity to consume one's own vernacular, if you will permit my lexicon to plumb egregiously expansive depths as a consequence of the loquacity I recurrently manifest in states of mental enervation.
Although I am confident I am echoing earlier statement on my part, it's no great endeavour to ascertain which of my posts are the consequence of my posting while excessively psychologically overextended.
So, in the interests of minimising taxation on the less linguistically read which is demanded by my writing in my present circumstances, I'm going to go and crash out.
Okay, I'm not really that bad. I do start using more bizarre words though. Partly because they're the ones that come to mind, partly because I start to think it's funny.

Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?
Over simplification can be funny because it cuts out details which may or may not change the whole meaning.
Over complication in communication doesn't work anywhere. Just slows the transfer of meaning, needless to say that's not good for humour.
Something I don't like about the latter, is that if there's no purpose to it, it's like a continual wind up which is the other side of the spectrum to funny in the realm of plain annoying.
/further thoughts

If I had to place a wager on the guns "alleged" range......I'd bet the the local avian could expel 1.5" x 3" solid feces more frequently and long before the gun will ever launch a spud 1/2 mile+. Do you realize the internal pressure and forces required to accomplish such a feat and are you aware of the recoil generated by those enormous pressures?adrak wrote:The local avian are incapable of expelling 1.5" x 3" solid feces
The gun is extremely nice in appearance and appears to be well planed and constructed. Very nice job!
Alright folks all bullshit aside I will be hosting a "Potato Festival" at my house the 22nd of this month. Hopefully I can scout for an open field that is at least half a mile so we can shoot some video of the cannon in action for distance. If I find the area I'll place markers for various distances 100 yards, 200, 1/4 Mile, Half Mile and freeze some spuds and sign them or some shit so you can't claim they're planted. I plan on throwing together a damage shot montage for this cannon so I'll throw the longest distance shot we get along with measuring it into the video. I don't want to keep fueling this pointless bs until we have some cold hard facts 8) .
A huge thanks to everyone for their feedback on the gun itself, it's a shame this topic lost all focus and turned into a giant "magic spud" argument. I'm sorry to have offended a few you so much. This is a great community and I don't want to put a bad spot on it over something so trivial. I'm still looking for feedback on whether or not to continue for our projected goal or save that design for another cannon so throw your thoughts my way!
Anyway.... video coming your way in the next week! Any suggestions for targets and music is welcome! After all it's for your entertainment

Try not to take it so personally
It's not like we 'hate' you or look down upon you now. Nothings changed, you've built a nice cannon and no one will be bothered too much when it comes to other contributions of yours to the forum in any of the sections. You say you shot half a mile, we're just letting you know that physics says otherwise and we're skeptical of your claim. But no hard feelings.

Haha I know I just wanted to try to cap a pointless argument 8) I hate youtube I went through the same shit so I stopped submitting to there.MrCrowley wrote:Try not to take it so personally

I've got to jump in here as well and question the 1/2 mile claim. I thought I was shooting golfballs with Trip Thunder in the 1/2 mile range until I actually found one..it was well short of 700 yards.....and that was the "bounced to" location.
Trip Thunder is a very similar setup to yours, except I was shooting with a burst disk and a longish 78" barrel....and about every possible optimization possible short of going to hybrid pressurized fueling. On top of that, I was shooting a well optimized-for-flight projectile...a golf ball and in slight tail wind conditions.
Frozen potato slugs are just not going to fly better than a golf ball.
BTW, I like the cannon. Reasonably thought out, built and presented. Welcome to Spudfiles adrak!!

That's the sort of attitude we like you might also want to consider some alternative projectiles - something smaller and denser fitted in a sabot, maybe even a dart of some description - to really give you a shot at maximising your range.adrak wrote:I don't want to keep fueling this pointless bs until we have some cold hard facts 8).
You're not completely forced to. Classical music is probably immune... although you're probably not interested in that.MrCrowley wrote:I suggest no music if you're hosting on Youtube. A few of my video clips have recently been muted.
Also, you may recall this topic, which discussed music which you can legitimately use:

As noted in the thread, anything licensed under appropriate Collective Commons licences can also be used.
"Start to think it's funny when in a tired state" would rather imply that its actual humourous value is probably limited.Hotwired wrote:Just slows the transfer of meaning, needless to say that's not good for humour.
Anyway, as I maintain, my sense of humour is naturally more warped than DYI's spoon, so any hope that what I think is of comedic value when I'm exhausted is optimistic.

Yeah, it's that important.
