combus. cannon material(s)

Boom! The classic potato gun harnesses the combustion of flammable vapor. Show us your combustion spud gun and discuss fuels, ratios, safety, ignition systems, tools, and more.

I am new to cannons and computer's.......ha.ha......
I need to build a potatoe cannon for a mini-full tracked vehicle on a design from a battle tank........the basic simple builders cannon for us first timers would work well........can someone e-mail me off group so do not have to search for it........my first cannon seen was using hairspray for propelant........launched a baking pot. I think 3" barrel......
My barrel will need to be about 6' long......any help would be greatly apreciated...................thanks, trainengineer bristol,tn.

I'm not one to usually do this, but don't ask for help and say you don't want to search for it.

I am somewhat confused by what it is you are trying to do...

You made a model tank and you want to put a cannon on it, why use combustion, it will be slower than pneumatic and not as powerful.

We would need more info to help you out.

And seriously use the WIKI, all human knowledge is conatined in the WIKI. The WIKI is 42, the answer to life, the universe, and everything (well, that may be a broad statement, but it is useful).

Obviously I did misunderstand.

I don't know if it was the bad punctuation, the bad spelling, or bad grammar, but there was something I misunderstood. Maybe you could point us in the right direction because, obviously, I am not the only one who misunderstood.

As far as education goes, yes I do. College Grad.

snotty nosed kid? you are seriously mistaken! and stop with the full stops..........its.....kinda.......anoying........you.........seee

and your first post was crap, didnt even ask a question as far as i can see
Good point!! I nearly failed english......
My machine/welding exsper. will fab. a steel cannon.
JUST LIKE the basic beginers cannon . I have built 2" black powder cannons b4 if u had ?.........loading and fueling will be the same......
REPLACEABLE barrel lengths will determine distance of any projectals.

It's going to be a little more complicated than that. Why not just build a pneumatic? It will provide much more power than a combustion cannon, unless you make another powder cannon, which then cannot be discussed here.

Thanks....I'm more into the "bang" than shooting a projectal.
My MAIN plan on coming here was to find out w/p.c.v. as to which was best.......gray or white......does it matter? If u go into the photo part of "vintage trackster" click on the "parade" photo and u will see my completed "look a like" tank. The one pic. is non-operational. Mine will pivot on a turret and barrel will elevate up/down. Rear of breech for fuel
will have a smaller opening to gas the chamber....made of boiler pipe
is the secret. Barrel thickness for weight reduction can be thinner if not useing projectal's.
What I meant on the search thing is as said, new to computers.....not sure were to look until william showed the way. Very impressed by cannons pictured at begining of all this. "u guy's take your cannon's seriously" was/is a complement from were I come from. train

As far as PVC goes, the gray may be Sch 80 or it may be electrical conduit. The white may be SDR or Sch 40. What you want is either Sch 80 o Sch 40. Also, make sure ALL the fittings are pressure rated and DO NOT use any solid propellant in a plastic cannon.

Now as far as that "bang" goes, you could go with a combustion. A C:B (wiki) of around .8:1 is usually the best at getting the most performance. If you want it loud, I suggest upping the chamber size.

But, pneumatics will give that "bang" also. Using a burst disk (wiki) they can be considerably louder than a combustion and usually a lot more powerful (if you haven't noticed, I tend to lean towards the pneumatics). Also, if you check out the burst disk, be sure to check out the triggered burst disk as well.

No. Check out the CO2 / HPA option.

http://www.trackster.com/PhotoGallery/k ... vink04.htm

Here is the link Train has been mentioning, took me an hour to find it. It's kinda a cool little machine. Very ghetto (copious amounts of ductape used before painting) :P

@Train
If you are really looking for noise and not so much firing ability, I would stick with combustion. Make an out of whack simple hairspray gun with about 4 times the chamber as barrel and it will roar and have very little actual power.

If you actually want to have a decent confetti shooter, consider going pneumatic. Pneumatic still makes plenty of noise, is quicker to reload and fire as it doesn't need to breathe, and you can carry prefilled air tanks inside the trackster to charge the cannon. By designing a breech loader for confetti rounds or candy sabots or whatever, you could have one hell of a parade goer. Just don't actually fire the thing at someone, the last thing we need is some kid with a tootsie roll through her eye on TV.

If you are interested in breechloading designs, up at the top of this webpage there is a search button for the entire forum. There are lots of options out there from clip feeds, hopper feeds, bolt actions, pump actions and more.

Topic cleaned up, trainengineer please don't insult a member as soon as you join this forum, espeically when you were in the wrong and he was trying to help out stay out of trouble, e.g a Mod like me getting on your back.

If you can't be bothered to search, we don't want you here, it's true, if you are too lazy to search this is the wrong hobby for you.

So either stop being lazy or stop insulting the members here.
Prefably you will do both.

This topic was pretty damn close to me locking it if you didn't get back on topic like you have done. Please search in the future.
The reason I didn't PM you like I should've was just to let everyone know why the topic may seem a bit mixed up with the missing posts.

The one thing a combustion has that a pneumatic doesn't is a cool muzzle flash. If you plan on firing at night, you'd probably want to go combustion. Be sure to oversize the chamber.

If you want a bang: use a burst disk + combustion
