I was looking through the maxim magazine for December 2007 and on page 186 it shows step by step on how to mod a kodak disposable camera into a stun gun...just thought i'd let you guys know. If you cant get ahold of the magazine, i'm sure it would be on their website or something.

but you cant use the stun guns from disposable cameras for ignition. can you ? i didn't think it created an open air spark.

I dont know. I personally used a stun gun for my ignition but when i was looking for possible ignition sources i seen some talk about disposable cameras being used for ignition so thats why i posted this. It might help out some people or even give ideas for modding this.

Camera flash ignition is a know ignition method.
You should look into the spud wiki, its described there.

I know its there but this might help because its step by step with pictures.

Does the Maxim mod actually produce a spark? Stunguns do not have to have the high voltage that they typically produce (50,000 V or more). Just dumping the big-ass photocap charged to 300 V into a person would be just as effective as the 50,000 V of a stungun.
The only advantage to the higher voltage is that the electrodes do not actually have to touch the victims skin for it to work.
Do they add a homemade coil/transformer to the camera?

Umm...
A 300V camera cap discharged through skin would give you a hell of a shock but it won't incapacitate you.
I've no personal experience of a fully charged 300v cap going through me and don't want to. A partially charged cap is enough of a shock for me
I have had first hand experience of someone
else getting a shock from the camera charging circuit though.
I asked for volunteers to touch two copper contacts with a finger while my micro charging circuit was live and eventually got one... I'd say enough current can flow to make it unbearable to maintain contact with.

A camera cap doesn't do much more than make you pull your arm back quickly and yell obscenities. You could say it "hurts", but to me it just feels like an uncomfortable involuntary muscle contraction.
When coupled with an ignition coil, however, the mild "kick in the arm" becomes a hard kick in the whole body that even makes your eyes lose focus; not something I want to do again and fairly dangerous. Could probably kill you if you have heart problems.
Edit: If a camera flash can dump 100+ amps into a coil that steps up the votage 100 times, does that mean I got hit with 33,000 volts @ 1 AMP? That seems like something to brag about

Having been shocked by full charged 350V camera caps, I can vouch they are not incapacitating.
20kV isn't incapacitating either, more of a profanity inducer, but as I mentioned elsewhere, I have high skin resistance and decreased pain sensitivity when compared to most people, so electrical stimuli don't affect me much.
Still, I don't imagine it would keep anybody down for long.

Unless his heart stops.......
But its not really about the voltage, its more about the amount of energy and the amount of current going through.
You could have 500.000 volts going through your heart with 0.01mA and feel nothing while a 300 volt, 30A current will fry you inside out.

I've zapped myself with a camera flash a few times, and I can tell you that it won't do you much good against that 300lb, heavily tatooed assailant. It would be the equivalent of jabbing him with a thumbtack really hard.
And psyc is right about it not being a matter of voltage, I have a 1KV transformer and I can touch it to my finger and barely feel a thing.

Try putting sharp points on the 300V photocap then jab it into your arm. It'll get your atention and would certainly discourage an attacker. The key is the sharp points so you get a small amount of skin penetration to overcome the very high resistance of skin.
Every get a sharp piece of wire carrying the 12V of a car electrical system jab into your skin while holding onto a grounded part of the car? Only 12V, but with a good electrical contact (a small amount of skin penetration) your arm will be sore for hours.

Sort of, 33KV at 1 AMP would be 33 kilowatt
if it was applied continously. Since the typical photocap discharges in less than 1 millisecond the actual power output is only about 30 watts.

If prongs went into your skin the resistance in flesh is only about 500ohms so with 12V, 0.024A of current will certainly be noticeable.

That should be joules, and it's probably more like 10 joules at best. 16 is the lower threshold for real danger. But 33kV is still a hard shock.
