So I broke out my gun and played paintball for the first time ina few years yesterday, and I saw some guy using a gun by Tippmann called the C3. For those who don't know, it's a pump gun that uses propane and an electronic ignition source to fire a paintball.

So something immediately clicked in my head, and I wondered if the C3's ignition module could be modified for use with a combustion spud gun.

It uses an ignition coil to produce a 40,000v spark, so I figure it would work very well.

Whatcha think?

but that means your gonna have to buy a 200 dollar gun just to tear it apart.

I have to agree...what's wrong with a $10 BBQ ignitor or $15 stungun?

Like starman said though I don't think it would offer an advantage over other ignition methods that are cheaper and easier to find.

Since it's a stronger spark than most BBQ igniters, won't it burn the fuel more efficiently and result in more power?
That's how pulsar spark plugs are supposed to heighten performance anyway.

It was just an idea that hadn't really been explored yet. I figure it's got to be pretty reliable and efficient, seeing as how it probably sees a lot of use and abuse over the life of the gun.

And for people who can't buy stun guns, and don't want to resort to using piezoelectric grill lighters, and aren't handy enough to use a flyback or camera ignition, I think it might be a viable option.

I'm willing to try it and report back. At $35, it's not terribly expensive, and it's very powerful, and reliable.

I think the idea has real potential, though. It fires multiple 20,000v sparks over the course of 3/4 of a second, and operates on 1 AAA battery. On top of that, it's very compact, and all self contained - it even contains its' own ignition coil.

And for people who can't buy stun guns

Anyone, regardless of country or age, can buy a stungun. Ever heard of BCARMS?

This system sounds like a fine investment for a handheld launcher though, as it's likely already miniaturized to a greater extent than most of us can manage, and obviously quite reliable.

Okay, ya got me there.

That's what I was thinking when I originally had the idea. I mean, I'm sure a stun gun could do the job as well, or even better, but half the fun of spud gunning is tinkering and experimenting, right?

Anyways, I plan on ordering one of these as soon as I get the chance, and implementing it into one of my cannons. If it works as well as I expect and hope it to, I'll definitely let you guys know. Hell, even if it's a failure, I'll still let you guys know.

Any more thoughts on this, guys?

I asked my parents, and they said no.

Back on topic, I think you should give it a shot. Considering it's high rate of action, it could become quite useful in the creation of a high ROF combustion. And as said before, it is a proven product in paintball.

Quite simply, no. The difference it would make would be so little it wouldn't even be noticable, not even with a chronograph.

sorry mate, sorta wrong there,

here in aus, it is illegal for Anyone to purchase, be in control or have acces to a stun gun. only people allowed to have in their possession a stun gun is police. thats final. lol, they arent allowed over here.

Not so true,it is indeed illegal to own a stungun,but it is not illegal to own a high voltage circuit board.Which is all you buy from BCARMS if I remember correct.Stun gun without a case=high voltage circuit board and nothing more.

Very true, they're just as illegal here in NZ, but BCARMS' stungun circuit got through border customs fine. I think he labled it as a part for a TV or something IIRC.
