Non Pressure Rated PVC Cement?

Hey so iv paid ridiculous amounts of money buying pressure rated pipe (not cheap here in aus) and glued some parts together already, but i just noticed that the PVC Cement im using says on the front that it is not for pressure pipe!! I was wondering if everyone thinks it will still be safe or not? :(

Never seen "non-pressure rated PVC glue". Who makes it and what is the part number or name?

I'm sure there has been a discussion about this before, but I can't remember any of the specifics. I final the final opinion was that it contained different chemicals, so should be ok, in the same way DWV is ok for spray and prays.

i used it on a pneumatic at 120psi and im still here
is this a combustion or pneumatic your working on ?

Some of the "universal" cement used to join ABS and PVC is marked this way. It works well, but is not rated because the final joint is often a combination of ABS and PVC of which one or both is non pressure pipe. The joint between the two is not as strong as both types of pipe have differing thermal properties which may compromise integrity. Overall it seems to be fairly tough stuff.

An unsafe vote would be proper for any PVC used in a pressure application simply because the pipe is not rated safe for air, but this glue is probably OK. When in doubt, test in a safe location.

I couldn't find the thread by the way, maybe it was just my imagination :s

The cements are slightly different, but it should still hold the joint. I hope you used primer with it? In most cases PVC solvent weld joints are much stronger than the fittings and pipe, but only if the joints have been cleaned well and a primer is used. If you have not cleaned the joints and used primer you have probably wasted you're pressure PVC fittings and pipe.

Edit: If you gave the pipe joints a good sanding to expose clean PVC then the joint will probably be ok. I have had joints hold about 12bar no problems without primer, but it was still Pressure Rated PVC Cement

thanks for all the help guys. Subsonic i sanded it but i didnt prime it.... sooo dumb damn damn damn. It is however just a spray and pray and i guess this limits the mods i can do on it. The only worry i have with the glue is that it specifically says not for pressure pipe :s Ill upload a pic of it ASAP

Thanks again for all the help guys.

If you sanded the joints it should be ok, but it might pay to give it a pressure test to be sure. The non pressure rated cement is still a strong joint, the only ones I have seen fail are ones on unprepared surfaces. There is a sticky thread (pardon the pun) on solvent welding PVC and the proper use of primer in the general spud area.

Errr...you don't have to sand the joints. The solvent actually melts them together so increasing the surface area is kinda moot. Cleaning them is necessary, though.

Was it the primer vs. cleaner debate thread that you were thinking of?

It might well have been. I thought it was about this topic, but considering I did a few searches and didn't find anything, I might well have been thinking of that thread.

http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/pipe-cl ... 18029.html Primer v Cleaner thread

What type of cannon is it for? (Advanced/basic combustion or pneumatic)

Doesn't mean it's safe.

@OP,
Just for the record, I, and the companies that make the solvents, recommend you use primer.
:)
