my First gun

This is my first gun. It's has a 3"x24" chamber and a 1.5"x48" barrell. It has a chamber fan for mixing/venting and it is abreach loader. I like the paint the best. It works pretty well but I haven't had a chance to distance test it yet. I'm shooting butane but most likely go to a metered propane set up soon.

Welcome to spudfiles.

Great job for a first cannon. Much nicer than my first. I like the paint job, also.

Did you use ABS or PVC? For combustion guns I prefer ABS (better failure characteristics), but either will do.

Do you not need barrel supports? If your barrel can flex much, it might not be a bad idea to give it some supports...

Look around this site at the several different common types of propane metering. The simple two-ball-valves-and-a-pressure-gauge method works fine and can be constructed for around $35. You can add a regulator, 3 way valve, etc... if you want to get more sophisticated than that, but it's kind of overkill in my opinion.

Again, great job for a first gun. Hope you stick around.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

lukemc- Actually it shoots really easy if you define the top of the gun by the orientation of the handle and not the barrel. The barrel is off to the side not on top. You hold it at the hip. Thanks for the 11 thumbs.

Pete- thanks for the comments. I used PVC and as far as supports go my barrel is rather short (4 foot) and flexes little. I'll probably go for the simple meter when I get around to it.

I used Krylon Ultra-Flat Camo. It's the stuff that is supposed to bond with plastics really well. Fuizon?(sp) I used A sandy tan color and black. I painted the whole thing black and then laid out some blue painting tape and cut stencils. Some over lapped so that I could make multiple shades of tan/black by peeling a layer off and lightly spraying on the exposed layer and then peeling off the next layer for a truer black.

The ball valve is 1.5" PVC and it is painted flat black except for the handle which I left red as it came. I thought I would be more aware if the valve was open or not if I left it bright red. I used a bushing that reduced from 3" to 1.5" and welded it like any other joint.

I have a butane can which I affixed a wd-40 nozzle to with the red spray tube. I open the ball valve. Let fresh air vent in with fan on. Fan off (just to be safe as my fan is very close to the ball valve opening) I spray the butane into the chamber. The red tube thingy lets me be sure of getting the butane deeper into the chamber so I waste less. It takes very little gas to get a good launch.

you mean you turn it off because the butane is going in right next to it, or is there some sort of potential for a physical obstruction? if its just the concentration of butane, dont worry about it. burshless motors dont spark, and the mixture isn't ideal for ignition until the fuel is fully mixed. you do use the fan to mix the fuel, right? and if its a potential physical obstruction then use your own judgement, you know your gun better than me, which btw it is a pretty sweet gun especially for a first, excelent paint job, looks good.
