VERA: My very favorite gun

Harness the power of precision mixtures of pressurized flammable vapor. Safety first! These are advanced potato guns - not for the beginner.

What did I miss? Were you about to declare that you finally loaded a sack of potatoes in the thing for the ultimate spud shotgun?

While I can't go into details.... It's worth noting that I've been remiss in pointing out that VERA fired a 185 pound projectile not so long ago.

hmmm, I wonder...

While you're here, your thehalls-in-bfe domain appears to be down...

I weigh just about 185lbs...hmm. Hey D_Hall, I'd like to apologize for my smart ass comment I made 10 years ago to you about how I thought "UHMW" should be called "UHMW" without the "PE" at the end. I had a job where people used that stuff and they called it UHMW, so I thought I was Mr. UHMW or something.
I was browsing the forums recently and came across that comment I made 10 years ago and I felt embarrassed by my behavior back then. I also greatly appreciate the work you've done in providing HGDT to the community. It's been a valuable tool of incredible convenience when designing my cannons.

Hey, vera still exists? I'm also stoked that spudfiles still exists too, I had completely forgotten about it until I got the notification for this thread. Also, another thanks for hgdt, I still use that and the airgun version from time to time.

Yeah, I noticed that a couple nights ago myself. I let the domain lapse. I'll probably just let it die. I will have to find somewhere else to rehost HGDT/GGDT if folks care, but thehalls-in-bfe is a chapter of my life that I should probably close.

LOL. No worries.

Thanks. One of these days I need to get off my ass and write the next version. I've had it mapped out in my head for so long....

Yup, she's still around. There's even talk of building her a big brother since some of the things she's been asked to do lately are on the ragged edge of what she's capable of. I give it a 25% chance of happening.

...a BIGGER brother?! Holy hell... I'll take a 25% chance for that, it's worth hoping for haha. It's a shame the nature of the work prevents more videos of Vera.

The folks that care really do care, it really is an invaluable resource you've given to this hobby.

Oh ho... bigger bore or bigger pressure? In the past a 36" bore was used for this sort of work...

Oh, believe me, we care. I know I do, big time. I just downloaded HGDT again recently from your site when I decided to build a new cannon. It would not have been as easy, convenient or simply as good without HGDT to guide the way and help me aim for that ball park performance I was after. An updated version of HGDT would be absolutely BADASS and might even stimulate a renewed interest in the hobby. What sort of features do you have in mind? I'm dying to hear about it.

Higher pressure. From 50 meters only the trained eye would likely be able to see the difference(s), but the goal would be 3X the muzzle energy and a simplified designed (we've learned a lot... VERA was made a lot more complicated than she needed to be simply to address unknowns).

Thanks. I suppose I'll have to start looking around for a place to host it.

Features.... Really only 2 features come to mind (although I'm sure more would appear once I got neck deep in code). (1) Integration of pneumatic and combustion based theory. That is to say that a pneumatic is just a valved hybrid that experienced a misfire. Or maybe a valved hybrid is just a pneumatic that.... Well, the point is that if done right the same code should be able to handle all cases with just a few switches set here or there. (2) A more rigorous CFD-based approach to calculations.

Sweet. I imagine you'd have to let the trailer roll a little to deal with the increased recoil? You're currently at about 25% of the energy of a 155mm howitzer on full charge...

I never thought about it that way. So many defective hybrids out there!
