Hello Spudfiles just wondering if i could have a little help with a problem i am facing. I am going to build a flamethrower/bbmg for airsoft, nothing to crazy, but then a question arose, what is the best method for making a flamethrower portable? I have a small cobalt co2 regulator and 20oz tank that i could rig to it but i was wondering if an HPA rig or some kind of backpack compressor would be better (the air compressor backpack seems silly to me, but i could be wrong). I have no experience with HPA rigs, so if that is the way to go then some information/links would be great. I am on a relatively small budget so nothing to fancy is needed. Thanks in advance for the helpful information.

If you already have a co2 tank and a reg to go with it, just use that, it will work fine provided you don't freeze the gun up with prolonged bursts of firing.
Ideally HPA would be better as it has a better consistency than co2, unlike co2 it won't freeze the gun up, or spurt liquid co2 into the mechanism.
If you already have that co2 tank and regulator though, I would just stick with it,
HPA rigs tend to cost quite a lot to obtain and set up, as all the equipment needs to be a lot more hardy due to the higher pressures involved etc...
I would steer clear of backpack compressors, never seen one that actually works to a degree which makes it usable.

An HPA setup will need a low pressure regulator, so expect to pay around $150 for bottle, reg and fittings.

As cammyd32 pointed out, prolonged fire with CO2 can cause the line to freeze up, so some sort of expansion chamber prior to the trigger valve would be a good idea.

Thank you for the good info, this forum has yet to let me down . Now i am wondering what the best method for the pre-valve expansion chamber would be?

Just a small PVC chamber should be ok, 5-10 cubic inches. I would include a pop-off valve for safety in case of regulator failure.
