You'll only lose power if you make holes in the barrel, and there are ways of making it detachable, but suit yourself.

Lol those cigarettes kill i tell ya (̅_̅_̅(̅_̅_̅_̅_̅_̅_̅_̅_̅_̅()ڪے yeah i know how to make it detachable, using some male and female sockets and threads etc i got it all planned im making it 20cm long, 2 wide, and using various parts to attach it all, and probs using something like steel wool or something similare to insulate it.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:You'll only lose power if you make holes in the barrel, and there are ways of making it detachable, but suit yourself.

I've just finished the first section of mine for my pneumatic marble gun. Its 14" of 20mm poly inside 14" of 1.5" pvc and wadded with fine steel wool. It works great at 100psi but Im wondering if its worth making a second layer say of 2.5" pvc? Also would it be worth insulating this layer or leaving it hollow?
Any thoughts appreciated, ill post some pics when its done.

I had a buddy make a suppressor for his 9mm carbine using a piece of 1 1/2" sch 80 with two caps eiter end drilled for size and he rolled up carpet for the suppressing medium. then he took two wood screws and screwed them into the muzzle side of the suppressor and held the thing to the gun by mini bungee cords. thing worked pretty sweet took the shot down to about a hand clap. but there were no holes in the exterior housing of the unit just the carpet as the suppressing medium to absorb the sound. I think the same coud be applied to a spud gun just get you a reducer to fit on the muzzle and hose clamp down some bungee cords to the barrel and work from there. ought to be pretty simple. let me know what you think

If you drill holes in the 1.5" PVC and sleeve the 2.5" PVC over it there should be a noticeable improvement, and insulation should increase turbulence and therefore effectiveness.mtronic wrote:It works great at 100psi but Im wondering if its worth making a second layer say of 2.5" pvc? You'll be more than doubling the available volume so it should be a worthwhile mod.

I built my suppressed barrels using a method similar to the full length design jackssmirkingrevenge posted earlier. I used a 28" length of 1.5" ABS, and drilled out 8 holes just about 1/2" back from the muzzle. A line of two holes every 90 degrees apart, taking up in all about 1.5" of barrel. I then took one 2" bell reducer, ground out the inside edges and slipped that down the barrel. I then took a section of 2" pipe measured so that it would cover the entire barrel and then drilled 4 holes in the suppressor pipe about 1/2" up from the bottom reducer. I then wrapped some old cotton undershirts around the barrel and slipped the cassing over them. Then I took another 2" bell reducer prepared the same way as the first and slipped that onto the muzzle of the barrel.
I've tested this out with just a fuel load and no wadding or projectile in the barrel, and the gun produces a very loud report, but with a projectile in the barrel, the sound is noticibly reduced. Not enough to completely muffle the sound, but enough to enable me to use the gun in my neighbourhood without complaints.

be carfull guys, a spudgun can be classified as a firearm (even pnuematics) if it is capable of propelling a projectile over your property line, and scilencers are illeagle for firearms unless you have special permits and licenses, but this is not so much to discourage you as it is to just make sure you dont get caught with it

I thought it was subject to state law? I don't believe its a federal law anyway... if it is it thanks to those darned Bradies and I haven't been updated ... (if it was up to them no one could own a pop gun)First let me say this: Illegal to make in the united states with out a firearm silencer permit
Silencers in nature reduce the effectiveness of firearms and potato cannons alike... so while your spud cannon sounds more like a spud fart your also experiences less impressive results.

This is not strictly true. Some silencers like the integral one fitted to the H&K MP5SD slow down supersonic ammunition in order to remove the sonic "crack", but at the same time reducing muzzle energy. Most silencers however do not affect muzzle velocity and in some cases actually increase the speed by a few feet per second.Jared Haehnel wrote:Silencers in nature reduce the effectiveness of firearms and potato cannons alike... so while your spud cannon sounds more like a spud fart your also experiences less impressive results.
I did a test recently, I tried two 5 shot strings with my Daystate Mk3 with and without silencer. In between strings I refilled the rifle to the same pressure. Here are the results in feet per second:
First, without silencer - 860, 860, 870, 869, 872 (866.2 average)
With the Daystate airstream CF silencer fitted - 877, 880, 884, 882, 883 (881.2 average)
This gives an average increase in velocity of 15 feet per second - in practical terms, an insignificant increase, which you'd never notice without a chrony, but interesting nonetheless.

I had never heard that a silencer could actuality increase the velocity thats interesting...thanks for that tid bit.
I was thinking of the silencers used for things like the MP5. Since most effective silencers reduced the speeds below the speed of sound... I guess that isn't true for slower moving bullets like the .45....
Hmmm.... I'm going to have to some reading

The 45ACP round is naturally subsonic and doesn't need to be slowed down, one of the reasons it was selected for the DeLisle Carbine in WW2.Jared Haehnel wrote:I guess that isn't true for slower moving bullets like the .45....

Thats kind of what donned on me when I was thinking it through... one of those "duh" moments...if you know what I mean...
I should probably edit that because it wasn't very clear or reflective of what I was thinking at the time...
