Small (But Powerfull Hybrid Idea)

I was thinking of building a small hybrid out of 2in sch80 PVC and then connect that to interchangable barrels. THe only thing different about the gun is that I want to take an aditional 3in sch80 PVC pipe and lay the chamber, union, and some of barrel into the 3in pipe. Then pressurize the the air surrounding the chamber, union, and barrel, to around 200 psi. This would then allow for a higher mix, and a higher pressure spike.
I have not taken the time to fully design the gun, but I beleive it will work.
Please let me know if you all think that this will work.
I know that going metal would be a better idea, but I do not know how to weld.

you wiuld need more than 200 psi to balance out the pressures. a 2x mix makes about 250 PSI. also the pressure on the outsige would simulate a vaccume on the inside and im not sure how much vaccume the pipe could take.
good idea though.
good idea though.

No welding isn't that hard, but no matter how good you are, pressure spike after pressure spike the welds would crack, and then blow. I wouldn't want to be the one to find out what that would be like.

In response to SpudStuff I don't mean to balance out the pressure but just make it capable of widthstanding higher pressures, such as say a 2x mix at 250 if there is 200 psi outside that than there is really only 50 psi pushing out so you could up the pressure untill you get to the maximum operation pressure of the pipe, but keeping in mind at the same time to subtract 200 from the pressure.
Also Im just hoping that the pipe can widthstand the pressure from out side, and it will be purly remote tested anyway, Im going to wip up a complete design and post it soon.

that sounds like a good idea cannon freak!
i don't know alot about hybrids, but if you make some drawings, i bet you'll get more support from us when building this new idea.
it sounds like a bit of a hassle (filling the surrounding chamber) but it would prolly be worth it.
could the chamber of the hybrid collapse under outside pressure if it got warped a little by heat or something? you prolly need to be able to remove the outside chamber for maintainence and stuff.

could you use this idea to use more powerful fuels, the only problem is that the 3\" pipe is already pressurized if the 2\" pipe ruptures then you only add the extra pressure, i think your idea will work fairly well

OK here is an image of the design

the entire back end can be removed to replace the burst disc, and please exscuse the drawing of the union I can not draw.[/url]

A pipe is essentialy an arch, and arches have very good resistance to \"crushing\". Which is why they are used in buildings/bridges/whatnot fairly often.
It's a practical way to increase the usable pressure of pipe by a large fraction.

Does anybody have any idea on the outside diamiter of a 2in sch80 union, beceause Im not shure if it will fit in a 3in sch 80 pipe.

So do you all think it will work. I just want to be reasured that it will work befor I go out and build it, you all are a very knowladgable group so I look forward to your input. Ive tweaked the design to a smaller union and have incorporated a way of using the compressed gas leftover from after the hybrid has fired to shoot a second projectile, it will not be as effective as a normal built gun due to the disyurbances in the air flow but it will give a secondary use to the compressed gas.
So do you all think it will work?

I think it will work. Also for the pipe dimensions, go to the Other section of this site, then Pipe info.

The only reason why I think my design could fail is beceause of the force of the blast, not the pressure spike but the shock waves from the blast tearing the pipe apart.
How much of a factor do you think this could play.
