I'm not too sure that this is in the right palce, but i have found a PDF regarding combustion-driven vortex cannon research, and it looked interesting, so I thought I should share it.

Cannons built using this PDF should be built so the chamber can be used with standard combustion cannon type fuels.

It looks like this may be violating the forums rules, as it contravenes the section on explosive materials, but the information is linked, not directly posted, so it should be OK.
So basicly, all the research is done, we just have to play with the formulas to get a working prototype running on, say acetylene + oxygen ?
I'd say to get pretty decent muzzle velocity, one would have to make it hybrid. In the pdf, they use a burst disc, they even studied its deformation.

I was running the hybrid on butane, it's weaker than everything else, but I think for testing purposes it would be just fine. The goal at first is never to make the best kaboom, it's to set it right. Once it's done you can make a fully working prototype. (I mean with things new like vortex guns; of course a pneumatic won't require days of testing. )
I might try to make a vortex gun, this seems really interesting. Once i get the ignition working again on the hybrid, i'll try to accomodate plumbing parts to form a vortex device.

That leads me to think that propane/butane/acetylene, or any of those gases will work, because they are just too light. You may need to mix in some Sulfur hexafluoride to your fuel/oxygen mix...C4 high explosive was tried and discarded as a propellant. This is because the structural integrity of the combustion chamber is limited to C4 charges below 8 g, and although the resulting exhaust gas velocity is high, the momentum of the vortex is low. Heavier propellants are needed for target knockdown...

Controlled DDT, perhaps? Not to the point of ACTUAL DDT, but close enough to get the flame front moving at a good clip for the best performance.

Not really. You just have a burst disk pop when you reach peak pressure. It looks to me like they are just designing a pulse rocket engine. They are using the standard De Laval nozzle, just with pulsed burn rather than continuous. The only hard part is figuring out how large to make the different diameters, to get perfect expansion, and M1 at the throat.
