As strange as it sounds, this actualy puts more strain on the motor. If you have access to a Kill-A-Watt power meter, you can see this loading directly. Raising the amount of gas you compress, increases the burdon on the motor. It has to do with being a gas, not a liquid. Higher pressure is more stuff to compress. That takes more power even though the boost in pressure is less. It's like carying a lunch bag up two flights of stairs vs carying a refrigerator up one flight of stairs. The bigger heavier object is more work.
Higher pressure air is bigger/heavier to move unlike higher pressure liquids that remain the same volume.
