Haven't been on in years but Ive been thinkin about my old cannon designs, anythings radically new since about 2008? I'm aware that there are finally piston hybrids now..

While rather tiresome to reload, I wouldn't quite call this "tame"...

In more "conventional" areas, SB15 and MrCrowley have built spool-piston hybrids which are reliable, run up to 10X or so, can be constructed without machine tools, and can be reloaded almost as quickly as "advanced combustion" launchers.

Pneumatics have grown a great deal as well, but I don't really keep up with that side of things to the same extent. I would say that the typical build style has "matured" somewhat in the past years, although in most cases it has not grown by leaps and bounds.

In fact, quite a few of us have got machine tools now. I currently have a lathe but no mill, and am working on ET and ETC (and by this I mean Al + H₂O and reactions like it, not explosive propellants) propulsion, as well as on a foray back into hybrids to take a closer look at optimal propellant mixes.

Seriously though- on the pneumatic scene not much has really happened as far as new ideas, at least in the year I've been here. And as others have said, piston hybrids, VERA, etc.

Galfisk had one before me, though did not post it until quite some time later.
Technically the first hybrid was a diaphragm valved gun by DR.

It seems we have a trend toward smaller, more energy-dense launchers recently, both in conventional guns and experimental ones. I'd read up on topics posted by DYI and JSR; there's some interesting stuff out there.

At the risk of sounding like an arse.... I think I pretty much went as far as anyone can reasonably go with the "larger, less energy dense" route.

But yes, you are definitely the out-lier in the dataset, and if we were averaging the forum trends by gun mass you'd probably offset the results noticeably.

LOL. Almost certainly true. VERA probably represents (by mass), the majority of all guns built by members of this forum over the past five years. I mean, 28,000 pounds represents a LOT of PVC!

So with all this machining gear about has someone taken steps to rifle regular PVC pipes with reasonable tolerences and repeatablilty that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
