MINI CONTEST IDEA: Build a gun with a limitation on parts.
Ok i dont know if this will actually become a contest but i thought it would be really fun.
Ok the contest idea is to build a spudgun, with a limit of the amount of parts you may use.
The part limit will go by a point system, originally it was going to be cash but we have many international members, as well as varying regional prices.
I need help to come up with a list of parts and the amount of points they will be worth, as well as a limit to the points.
For example lets say the point limit was 100 points and lets say
Sprinkler valve = 30 points
certain length of pipe, and size lets say 1' of 2" pipe = 10 points
Srchader valve = 5 points
Blowgun = 10 points
and so on.
Any part can be used, but if it is not on the list that i want to make up, for example a coke bottle lets say it wasnt on the list. You would be required to post it here, and we would agree on an amount for it.
The prize would be....i dont really know we can think of something!
But i think this would be very fun, but also something that can be kept small and in order.
It would have an ending date, for example july 30th, after that all entries are not counted.
Participants must also have some kind of camera to take record of the building process as well as the final product, i say take a record of the building process because it would be unfair if someone just entered a gun they had previously constructed.
Tell me what you think, i personally think it would be great fun and something almost all of us could participate in.

Sounds ok... it would be tough to actually do
People would use tiny point items (tees, springs, short lengths of pipe) to create piston valves, which would easily overtake the sprinkler valves in performance. And who would be judging how much each part is worth
Good idea in theory, hard to do in the real world

I don't think that recording the building process is entirely necessary. What exactly is the goal here, using the smallest number of points possible, or using under X number of points and whoever performs the best wins? If it is performance, you may have problems with verifying distances and accomplishments, a prize would only increase the amount of liars and charlatans (<--vocab word) in the contest. I think the contest should be for who can build the cannon that uses the least number of components (point value). Great idea, competition is always fun!
You cant judge people on range and accuracy over the web because I know that many people will lie...
If this does happen I would definately enter my "AA" coaxial that's in process, it should be done very soon, all I need is another 1" to 1/2" bushing because I Dremeled off to much of my current one....
I think it should be judged mainly on the looks, the concepts, and the designs used...

Sorry to be so cynic about the negatives, but I tried to make some positive suggestions.
Judging is the main problem. You would need to have impartial judging. People who have been here longer are usually the best choice, but their judging abilities would be clouded by any e-friendships or e-grudges formed. New people are hard to trust also. Admins might be the best option, but they are just as opinionated as the rest of us.
Upon what to judge is also iffy. Number of parts: limits functionality, which is kind of pointless in my opinion. Time spent, funding, Distance, accuracy, precision (no not the same thing), etcetera: Too hard to prove, leaves too much room for dishonesty. Easiest things to judge would be ingenuity/originality, appearance, and size.
Prizes are also a grey area. If you are asking supa-valves to be handed out and other such things, that would be very hard to accomplish. Spud-bucks and other such fictional prizes would be easiest, but not much motivation. (But who doesn't want a g-string?) Maybe various contest specific titles and e-items could be awarded.
I voted for anyways, but it would be difficult.
Fun mind you, but difficult.

Never meant they were childish, but everyone has an opinion. Sorry, didn't mean to attack the admins.Mihlrad wrote:the admins of the site are not little kids who choose by popularity or friend wise, the admins if they were judgers would more than likely be extremely fair in their choosing of a winner. We have very good admins.
Yeah, and ol' MacGuiver has somefree time now that he got bored with the Stargate.
Id be happy to judge if you guys composed and devised a good method of judging. That "is if" you do. Most commonly these things are talk and not put into the works, although I would greatly like to be proven wrong.

You are so right pimpmann! Nobody has started any kind of contest yet.
So my question to the mods would be: could you open a new section called contest entries? That would finally put an end to all this useless talk.
My suggestion is to loose the limited parts idea because I personally wouldn't want some kind of part-count be the reason to hold back on creativity and innovative thinking.
I'll be glad to donate all my spudbux for a contest prize.

Problems with the spudbuxs as the prize is that I could give you 28.5 gabillixillazillion if I wanted to. If you guys wanna win something recruit Theopia members and when a fricken' cannon...
Essentially what would the prize be to persue such a goal? I think PC would be willing to open such a section if it was organized prior hand. You guys can try your hands at mock versions, so if in the event of such a forum being created we could simply tweak some text and thats it.
I like the idea because Im all for competition. I dont think we need to bust a nut over "competition" because I think were all good sports and understand if we dont win that it doesnt mean you suck. Apperantly the other spudforum is having a debate over such competions, but I personally view it as people that have just seen there kid lose to much T-Ball, and are tired of helpless losing.
EDIT- BTW Brian the brain, its good to see your getting back into posting... There for a while you werent posting.

I all ready made rules and differnt classes to enter. If you do it you send it in and you get a number, then when the time limit is up you send in you stuff(pics and vids or just pics) And then they get judge by mods or something.
