This is the exact reason why donations are few and far between, most members are younger, too young to even have a debit card.I would donate if I could, but I'm only 13 and I don't have a major income. But if this site is still up when I get my debit/credit card, I would be more than glad to donate.
Site down a lot lately?

I would reverse the transaction if you did Crowley, as you have donated enough time and effort than I could have ever hoped for.

I guess a better server for the same price is a hard find. I myself have never priced such a thing. What would one look for to host a site like Spudfiles? A good active directory that can handle a large amount of organizational units??? A good forest structure???

That is actually the very cheapest price out there, and I am currently at one of the very cheapest hosts I can find (part of the reason it isn't the best hosting!)
With web servers, there is no active directory or anything, it's a whole different ball game. SpudFiles runs on a Linux server anyways.

I don't suppose you could get a few nodes of your own with some donations?
You can get hosting on Windows servers as well. However, the IIS (the Windows web server service) runs mostly independently of how the active directory is setup. The active directory represents the user, group, object, security mechanism in a traditional client/server relationship.
Windoze servers aren't exactly reliable compared to linux usually. It appears to me that the host of spudfiles has buffer overruns or something. I'm pretty sure it is the hardware or user error.
Windoze?...
Not very original ammo.
I deal with Windows servers (among others) as part of my livelihood. It truly depends on the quality and redundancy of the hardware, competency of administration and the particular infrastructure and network systems setup as to how reliably any server runs, no matter its underlying OS.
You're speaking and parroting generalities you've heard others say.

If you take paypal, I'll see what I can do next time I have some money in there. Might be a while, fresh out after buying a wii + pc repairs. But I'd be happy to donate.
Edit: ah it is PP. I'll see what I can do.

competency of administration
Thats the truth. In class some of us where able to get our domains working well and others were not. The problem with Windows is it's to in-deth/over complicated. A good administrator is also proactive instead of reactive. Found that out in class the hard way.

Not to mention, Windows servers don't run PHP or MySQL very admirably.
I'd love to donate at the moment, but I'm working on paying off a
$140+ debt with the bank (which started with an overdraft of only $0.38 on my checking account), which is eating up all of my spending money at the moment.
Maybe in the technological future, select members could donate bandwidth and storage instead of money, and the site could remain up and running smoothly pretty much all of the time.

Course, but I have experienced enough windows hicups to be swayed toward linux. Granted, I don't run linux on this computer as the main partition because it is a family one, but... I would for a work computer. Gaming? Nah. Too many compatibility hurdles. Linux generally requires less special attention, and the features make sense. I know a large degree of it is hardware and administration, and I recognize that.starman wrote:Windoze?...Not very original ammo.

Upgraded member status, thank you for the donation.
FYI the downtime this afternoon was caused by a DDoS attack, not a lack of server resources or server instability. The attack has been mitigated, for now at least.

SpudFiles isn't on a dedicated server from what PCGUY has said, so the server is shared with other websites. Another websites could have been the target and SpudFiles was caught in the crossfire.
All spud gun related projects are currently on hold.
