The SA80's reputation for being jam-prone is rather undeserved. Actually, given it's one of the few firearms I have a good idea of how to handle and un-jam (It's cousin, the L98A1 cadet rifle, is probably the single firearm I am most experienced with), it's not the worst option.

Fine then, if you're complaining, I'll use an AK-47 instead. I won't hit anything, but it won't jam.

I agree that the SA80 saga was mostly tabloid hype but if I was actually there in combat, I think I'd still go for a rough soviet product that will just keep on working no matter what you throw at it... or it at

As a wise man once said. "The AK-47 and AK-74 are both reliable weapons taking almost any punishment you can throw at them. Unfortunately, accuracy beyond the first round is questionable."

Oh, and I'd personally take an M-60.

fair point, but if there were people shooting at me, I'd rather have a rifle that I know will work - it might be inaccurate, but it will certainly have a better hit probability than a jammed rifle that doesn't fire at all.

If I wanted pure firepower, I'd whip out the ever-reliable M-60 Saw. That was back in the day before SAW meant squad automatic weapon. It meant you could saw something in half with it.

Ideally, if I personally had to be in combat, I'd want something that:
- shot straight
- stopped whatever it hit
- worked reliably
- didn't weigh too much and wasn't too big

Unfortunately, this isn't the easiest thing to find, and even worse the government's version of what it thinks its troops should have runs a little more like:
- goes bang
- cheap
- kills more enemies than users

Kills more enemies than users, nice. Well I know that the m60 is a surprisingly accurate weapon, unlike the 249 SAW. Though it was a bit heavy. I would say a famas, but those wussy French insisted on using a 5.56 round instead of 7.62.

In all fairness, it was the US that started the 5.56mm trend, the French adopted it because it became a NATO standard cartridge.

Perosnally I'd go for something like the OC-14 Groza - all the reliability of the AK action in a compact bullpup package that fires a nice heavy 9mm spitzer bullet that is subsonic, so very easy to suppress, but which is also armour piercing by virtue of its sheer weight and steel-cored construction.

The 5.56x45 isn't all bad. It does still get reasonable energy through a higher muzzle velocity, which does increase range, and reduce travel time.

I know of no rifle that would be my perfect choice, but I'm sure Jack will know immediately of at least 7 examples that would be even better... so I won't even mention my preferences.

But... if I could have my perfect firearm (not for a combat situation though) custom made for me... I think I'd have an 8-gauge shotgun, fed from a bullpup magazine, with the option for semi-auto, full-auto or pump action operation.

It would kick pretty heavily, but it would be equally fun to use.

That would be quite a hefty beast to hand, especially on full-auto! Of course you'd want the barrel rifled to give you an accurate slug option for longer ranges, though I'd still question the heavy calibre - what's wrong with a 12 gauge?
