One day i was searching the dick smith site (an electronics store in australia don't know if you have it in america or where ever your from) for a new ipod and some electronics (project box and a switch :)) and found a "Hi-Energy Ignition Kit". i was wondering if this could be a possible ignition system for combustions or hybrids.

The "Hi-Energy Ignition Kit"

The site said this about it:

A Universal High-Energy Electronic Ignition System that is designed to work with a variety of input triggers. It employs a high temperature micro-controller (16F88 E-P) to control the switching transistor and sense the trigger signal. Includes all specified components and hardware including the printed circuit board, metal diecast box and a comprehensive instruction manual.

Features:
*A Universal High-Energy Electronic Ignition System that is designed to work with a variety of input triggers.
*It employs a high temperature micro-controller (16F88 E-P) to control the switching transistor and sense the trigger signal.
*Not only will it work with traditional points but will also happily function with any type of trigger signal, including those provided by factory and after-market reluctor, optical and Hall Effect distributors.
*It will even interface with an ECU (Electronic Control Unit) ignition output trigger, making it a universal fit for all single coil cars, motorcycles and go-karts. Note, this Hi-Energy Ignition system will NOT work with multi-coil cars.
*This all-new design also compensates for lower battery voltages during cranking, features reduced coil heating, has adjustable intelligent dwell and incorporates a theft-prevention ignition disable.
*Can be operated from a 5 to 15 volt negative earth supply.
*Has selectable dwell period.
*Coil switches off whenever engine is not running.
*Minimum spark duration of 1mS
*Special operation for poorly operating points.
*The kit is supplied with all specified components and hardware including the printed circuit board, metal diecast box and a comprehensive instruction manual. Note, the components supplied in the basic kit will enable the constructor to assemble the project for "points" ignition system. All other components needed for either reluctor, Hall Effect or optical trigger systems are not supplied in the basic kit but available from your local electronics retailer. Please refer to the kit instruction manual for further details.

Well...yes, it would definitely provide the spark needed to ignite a fuel mixture. The $50 tag is a bit of a turn-off though.

Nice find.

Here in Australia it would be hard to find a better store bought device for less than fifty dollars- stunguns are illegal, although can be bought from BC and such, but even then you would be left with not much change out of 50$ after shipping.
f.c. , it says it is designed for motor bikes and go-karts, they compress the fuel mixture to say 10x and it still sparks, it could throw an open air spark around 12mm i would imagine.

Great find Kid

It would work but you don't need any of this fancy micro controller business for $50. Go to the junkyard, get an ignition coil, a spark plug and give it some juice from a 9 or 12 volt battery and your set.

Lol ok then. One other thing, it doesn't say how much voltage it puts out, all it says is "Hi-Energy"

yeah but looking at it with all the silcone chips and such i'd say it would be pritty decent amount of voltage and a nice spark. :D :D :D
