You just keep making it harder and harder to find targets...
Maybe you should just order a military tank... Then you could entertain your self for a while... and after that gets to be boring, you get a) hired by the govt. to work for their military design crew, or b) locked up in jail for the rest of your life...

I realize that I may increase the chamber size to 85ci and use 600psi which the pump I am building would easialy be capapable of.
and I would use a 60ft by 1in barrel if i do all that and fire the same round he did I *might* succeed.

Great
I will do my attempt in 3 or 4 weeks from now when I get some more money so i can buy a 60ft barrel.
Would it be okay to use 3/4in pvc for the barrel at 600psi
I cant remember the rating of of the barrel off the top of my head
Edit: with a rating of 480 psi

That made my day, thanks. :)

I have to say, that is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

On the way home from school today, I saw on the side of the street a metal covering for a storm drain, you know the ones on the side of the road like this.

Well this covering is meant to be cemeted into the curb to stop foreign objects going down the drain, it's atleast 3/8" thick, and made from cast iron I would presume. I figured it'd be a great dead man's back stop, but now seeing what you've done here, seems to have set me a goal to shoot through this at some point in time. :)

Just need to make one helluva hybrid :P

With a 60 foot barrel, you are looking at about 800fps and 3800ft/lbs, which is around 20% more energy than was transferred to DYI's projectile.
Wow that is a lot Ill make that a 30ft barrel instead a 60ft barrel which would be more than enough.
Ill get a vid of it too.

First of all, commiserations for your long-suffering shed.

Secondly, consecrated copulating excrement! That is *double* the penetrative abilities of the standard M16 ball round, and equivalent to the penetration of the armour-piercing round! Kudos, and shame there isn't a video, the flying sparks would have made for great footage :D

I found this info at http://www.coilgun.info
Its an idea as to how to get even greater muzzle velocities...
sorry for its length, but it is something genuinely interesting in the way of AP rounds

The Momentum Transformer
A novel concept described here for the first time is what we shall call the "momentum transformer". It makes use of a so-called "flux concentrator", first studied by Howland at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in 1960[19]. A flux concentrator is simply a conducting cylinder with a funnelled bore, and at least one radial slot extending from the inside to the outside surface. The cylinder is surrounded by a pulsed field winding, preferably imbedded in a helical groove to minimize hoop stresses. A fast pulsed current in the winding induces an opposite image current in the outer surface of the cylinder. Due to the radial slot, this induced current is forced to return along the inner perimeter of the cylinder, thereby generating a magnetic field in the funnelled bore. All of the magnetic flux which would have filled the pulsed field winding in the absence of the conectrator is thus compressed into the central bore, resulting in a field intensity which is higher than it would have been by about the outside-to-inside cross section ratio.
The device was used at MIT for high field research and also for industrial metal forming. In 1965, Chapman[20] used a flux concentrator with a tapered bore for accelerating milligram metal spheres to hypervelocities. Using a first stage explosive flux compressor, Chapman managed to reach peak fields in excess of 7 megagauss, starting with an initial field of only 40 kilogauss.
The momentum transformer proposed here uses a flux concentrator as the armature or sabot in a chemically driven conventional gun. The bore of this sabot is occupied by a much smaller projectile, for instance a rod-shaped armor penetrator. The muzzle end of the gun is a pulsed field winding imbedded in a helical groove, which is excited with a current pulse sufficiently slow to penetrate the barrel and fill the bore with magnetic flux. When the sabot enters this flux region so rapidly that the effective penetration depth of the field is small, it compresses the flux into its inner bore, decelerates drastically, and expels the projectile contained in its bore at a much higher velocity. The device should have very little recoil because the muzzle coil acts like a muzzle brake, transferring much of the sabot momentum to the barrel. The process can be multi-staged with a series of nesting sabots.

Ok, in simpler terms; was the steel annealed, normalized, tempered, hardened, case hardened...?
Ah, yes, I get it now. I was a bit tired and distracted last night. The plate is almost certainly normalized, as commonly available steel bar stock can't scratch it, but the hole punch (obviously) can.

And Lenta, that's some interesting reading, but I really doubt I'll be making anything like that, considering that when I finish the current round of upgrades to the SCTBDC it will be capable of firing a similar round near the trans-sonic range, and that another current project could achieve even more power.

I think that I *might* be able to shoot through 1/2" plate by the end of the summer, with a similarly sized hole in the target. I'll have to wait until the snow thaws out to a useful degree before I start the real R&D stage on better AP projectiles.

I'm not exactly surprised, I knew this was coming, it was only a matter of time after Nova's attempt at 5mm steel that 1/4" was coming - but don't misunderstand me, I'm still very impressed.

It looks a little like what happened when I fired a dart at 2mm steel... although almost infinitely more awesome. If only HEAL were 100%, I'd be out there right now trying it myself, if with a smaller calibre dart.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

Nice...

Thats a fairly heavy projectile you might consider several sand bags backed up with a heavy steel plate. If you use the 3/8 steel plate alone you risk a ricochet... the sand bags should slow it down enough and contain the round...
