I'm a huge fan. Like Randy has probably changed my life. BTW it's spelt Rhoads.

It took me awhile to figure out because it's been mis-spelt so many times.

Depends on your definition of "mature", I suppose.
Of course we laugh at farts...one of the funniest things in the natural world.

Uh oh need to get back on topic....maybe someone should develop a fart powered spudgun....

Yes most adults get a serious streak in there lives, where they turn into Dilbert clones and become slaves to their 401k advancement. Most are unhappy, overly stressed-out human beings. I know, I used to be one.

Been there, read the topic about it, watched the bans hit.

Anyway, like most have said, since the death of the SGTC, this is the main hub of spudding activity. Yes, the idiot posts piss me off a lot too, and no, despite being a newbie once myself, I have no sympathy for them if they get flamed/stomped on.

One of the former SGTC gods, DR/BewareOfDog, has begun to establish a community at http://www.spudcom.com as a sort of "revival" of the glory days of yore. It's very seldom posted on, but hopefully we can draw some mature and intelligent folks over there.

The OP is an interesting question. I follow, off and on, several other "amateur engineering/science" forums (water rockets, coil guns, radiation counters ...) and all of those areas are about the same as spudguns. There is a constant stream of noobs getting tangled up with more experienced people. (And "experience" has next to nothing to do with the person's age or post count).

The OP'r thinks the spudfiles forum "lacks a mature base" but he signed up with the user name of "swinging_dic_tater"? Kind of a pot calling the kettle black situation.

I could swear someone on the SGTC forums would not stop posting immature jokes about fart-powered spudguns. He was eventually taken to TWOS and banned if I remember right.

The staff of Roguesci are intolerant of idiots, rather like me, and rightly so.

And as for their grammar and clarity obsessions, well I have a handy little rhyme to explain that to you:

"Johnny was a chemist,
but isn't anymore
What he thought was H2O,
was H2SO4"

Even in parts of their forum where chemistry is not discussed, they enforce their grammar laws, again, like the nazi regime.

I'm pretty sure that any effective government enforces their laws. Kind of pointless to have laws if you don't enforce them, eh?

As for the Nazis (that's capitalised, you know), I don't recall that they had any particular obsession with good grammar. They did keep their populace in check, which is a good thing in any case. I would hesitate at using the Nazis to exemplify any unsavoury tendencies, with the exception of increasingly insane leadership, and the unfortunate consequences of rushing one's plans. They did manage to take control of almost all Europe, you know.

When you think about it, any forum populated by people incapable of putting together comprehensible, well thought out sentences looks like a rather dodgy forum. This means that its information is often thought of as inaccurate and dangerous. With subject matter like Roguesci deals with, they can't afford to have a cluttered forum that looks like it's populated by idiots and 12 year olds (or some combination thereof).

The bottom line is, if you're familiar with the language you're typing in (English, in this case), you don't need to work at it to type in good grammatical form. If you aren't familiar with the language, you should lurk until you are, or post on a forum that is in your language.

Oh look, Godwin's law has been invoked - someone mentioned Nazis.
Even in parts of their forum where chemistry is not discussed, they enforce their grammar laws.
And you should suddenly lapse your rules because of that?

Personally, I'm appalled at the view that "U dont need 2 speel rite, this are teh interweb". If you can spell right, you should - and if you can't, an increasing number of sites (including this one) have spell check buttons to help with that.
Or, like I do, you can use Firefox, which has an automatic spell checker, which highlights words for me on the off chance I misspell them.
It also seems - ironically - it doesn't recognise the word "Firefox", judging by the little red line under the word.

I respect that some people are not native English speakers, and that a number of people have dyslexia - they have a decent excuse, most people don't.

Pity that although Britain kept the Nazis out in WWII, they seem to have been invited into the country in recent years.
The current UK government are creating new laws that making a mockery of the European convention of Human Rights - legislation set up to avoid the atrocities the Nazis perpetrated.

And it's all to prevent "terrorism"... didn't work on July 7th 2005, did it?

Note: Perhaps you should ignore my ranting. I've been spending too much time on forums full of middle aged, middle class, and ill-tempered conservatives with chips on their shoulders, and I think it's rubbing off.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?
