to be honest, i can't envisage a spud exploding unless it was little more than the skin left, spuds are pretty tough vegetables you know

I say go for it. Even if it doesn't advance the technology, throwbacks are always nice.
Plus, it's unique. How often do we honestly get to see unique ideas around here lately? I'd love to see it done, even if I'm not a fan of minis. For an even more metaphorical, artsy meaning, fire PVC bullets from it. That would be a hoot.

Completed projects:
CA1 SMSS Basic Inline
CA3 PDAB Airburst Cannon
Current Project: Bolt action rifle (25x140mm + 1in shot)

This promises to be entertaining, and for me it is a nice way to make my first combustion, though i doubt i will bother doingt it before the due date i want to finish my first pneumatic first.

Go for it.
Yes, it is kind of silly but so what? No sillier than using a tennis ball can as the chamber.
If done properly it won't explode. (Lots of dumbass posts on the possibility of it exploding). The peak pressure in the chamber is really only dependent on the ammo's mass, diameter and friction. If those values are low enough then it won't explode since the chamber pressure won't get high enough.
You might consder using the spud as the chamber, barrel and ammo. Cut a plug out'a the spud inject fuel, reinsert plug as the ammo. No barrel at all.
Pin electrodes might work, easy enough to test if the spud is to conductive. If the sud is too conductive then you might be able to get away with only insulating one of the two electrodes. If the pins are firmly attached to their wires then you don't really have to worry about the pins becoming projectiles, the wires will stop'm.

Well the good thing is, if it does fail, how much damage can a chunk of potato possibly cause if you're wearing eye protection?

For heavens sake why does not one jsut make a spud pipe bomb, i think i should, just to check(i have made real pipe bombs so a spud wont hurt me after all i am not using explosives). I will tell you in a min what happens, using gasoline as a fuel.
