Do the people who make these insane cannons create them from their own imagination? or do they modify things that they have seen before and thought would be successful. Just wanted to know as i have just started to make cannons, or a cannon, and it took me no time as it is far to basic for my liking.

most things have already built by someone els, so not that many are revolutionary, most are copy of someones design with there own twist/improvement on it.
example
poland_spud made the first one.(i think)

Even mine are an improvement on some basic designs. The basic design is an air chamber holding air under pressure and released by a valve. Using physics and doing some brainstorming the new valve was designed.
It was designed with several goals.
1 fast
2 high flow
3 reliable
For fast effort was made to reduce the mass of the moving part as much as possible
For high flow the effort focused on minimal bends, turns, edges, length, or anything else that would impede flow.
Reliable required a proper bumper and other reliable materials so it would last a long time without destroying itself.
The result is a valve slightly slower than a modified sprinkler valve but with much better flow. It is faster than most piston valve designs due to the 0 pressure in the pilot when it opens.
