I would just get a sheet of steel and start filing shapes into it, this way you can learn very fast and cheap...

Well my problem is that a sheet of steel will cost me about $20, just for a 12x12" piece... I will definitely practice some more.

You could straighten the edges up a little though, they look kinda crappy. Tape some sandpaper to a bench and sand it down that way; it's a lot easier if you haven't had practice with files. Finish the curvy parts the opposite way, and the imperfections in them will wear down gradually and evenly.

Fnord, I used my bench grinder to smooth it a bit more and it actually took on a better shape. I didn't have time to take a picture, but when I gave it to my girl friend her face lit up and I don't think I have ever seen a happier person.

did a cold start on my 72 cub yesterday, boy did she start right up!!!!, she started right up and continued running , not pops no nothing, my grandfather had machines that last!!!!


it was sitting for 4 months , hasnt moved and too cold out to do any yard work so no need for it to move, so i figured since i had time, i go give her a start

Those old one-lungers were built strong, man! My Dad picked up an early-70s Craftsmen once, had a three-speed, IIRC. Never did get the deck working, but my brother and I had fun dropping it into third and doing wheelies on it. I really wish he hadn't taken it for scrap. I was thinking of dropping a bigger motor in it and using it for the street fair tractor pull.

Any *nix whizzes in the house?

I'm fixing to install a couple of cheap SSD's in RAID0 and need a way to backup and restore compressed disk images. So far, what I've got is to run the command:

dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 | bzip2 -f > /mnt/backup/backup[date].img

To do a block level copy of the disk and compress it to a file on my backup drive. Then, to restore it, I assume I would:

bzip -dc /mnt/backup/backup[date].img | dd of=/dev/sda bs=512

To restore an image.

Do you have any quicker ways?

Pictured below is the first command running as we type. At 2.4 MB/s (which is variable at the moment since I'm using HDD's and dd will read slower as it progresses on the platter, and will probably be a little faster on a SSD), it'll take about 4 hours to copy a 32 gigabyte disk.

yes they are build to last, not like walmart junk, i had deck problems with mine, so i parked the deck and just use to do yard work with , my neighbor needed help building a retaining wall and needed a way to move the brick from his truck to where the wall was and wheel barrel would be way to heavy, so we loaded between 1200-1250 lbs on a trailer and mine pulled no problem, his john deere couldnt budge the trailer, and his is a newer deere 23 hp , mines only 14 nd works better, glad my uncle gave me it,
