Hello spudfile community. Recently I purchased an ICS 190 GLM and a bunch of grenades and it preforms amazingly. There is one problem though, I want to extend the range of the launcher further than the nerf footballs that I shoot will go. I thought about basing the design of of those plastic tubes that generate there own lift when you throw them but I am not positive this method would work due to the mechanics of the toy. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

So you basically want a projectile that will fly further?

May I direct you to this thread :)

Needing to keep things safe will mean some compromise in ballistic performance, because a projectile that is good at cutting through the air is by definition also good at punching through other things.

What exactly is your current projectile?

My current projectile is just a nerf football.......but i think i can do better than that, also thanks for the info is there a particular page of this thread where there is a good design considering there are so many pages?

Are you saying that you use the Nerf Footall in the 40mm barrel one at a time and using the 6 grenade cartridges for the power source only?

For one thing the Nerf Football is about 50mm diameter and putting that in a 40mm barrel is going to have excessive friction.

There is an alternate 40mm projectile;

Edit; they use to have 40mm but now it looks like 50mm only.

Yes I have just been using the cartridges to power the football. Thanks for the link.

The biggest problem I see is that you have no barrel for the Nerf Rocket.
This would help substantially with much further range and accuracy.

What is the OD of the barrel behind the Orange ring?

Dewey makes a very good point, the friction is costing you a lot of velocity, especially if there is no seal between the drum and the breech.

An ideal projectile for dramatic range increase would be a sub-calibre dart, but then the question is how safe do you need it to be?

I think you guys are absolutely right about the friction you have to force the nerf round into the barrel to make it work. Safety wise, i don't plan on shooting this round at people, only tanks and buildings but there is still an off chance that a person could get hit by the round so it needs to be very safe. As for barrel OD i will need to check that,but i like the idea of an extension.

I have used a dry spray on mold release with PTFE (Teflon) on Nerf Vortex which will help. You should be able to find something like this locally;

As a side thought for the barrel extension.
It could be made such that the extension has a quick attach/release mechanism to the launcher so each extension could hold a preloaded Nerf rocket that is protecting the rocket until time for use.
Example; six preloaded extensions that could be pushed on and rotated to lock in place.

This is the lethal variation:

Replace the steel with something softer... voila

After you suggested a sub caliber dart i thought of a simple nail dart i made for one of my air cannons. It was just a nail with a paper cone wrapped around the head that fit the inside diameter of the launcher. perhaps a non lethal version of that would work as well? Thanks for all of the help with this :)

The point of making a subcalibre dart is that you reduce the cross sectional area of the projectile, ie the area when you're looking at it from the front, because this reduces drag and allows the projectile to retain its velocity for longer, and therefore fly further.

If you have a cone the same diameter as the barrel, you don't really have any advantage over the Nerf rocket.

Thanks for preventing me from making a stupid mistake. I think i will get to work on this round ASAP. one last question though, I see that this dart has fins so do i need to mess with the center of gravity of the dart to make it more stable or will the fins take care of that?

Take a set of calipers and measure your true bore size. "40mm" launchers are anywhere from 1.360" to 1.62" it seems. True 40mm is 1.575".
