The Offcial Machinist Thread: Revised 01/04/2014
Notice the angle of tool in roughing versus finishing. It really makes a difference with metal.
If you ever try boring a PVC pipe for an o-ring fit, smooth the inside with sandpaper when your finished.

I suggest you make Dimply.
It's a great way to cover all basic operations and you get a nice pen gun at the end of the day

Exactly my thought, but right now I lack some small diameter stock. Turning down these big bars down would cust a lot of time and kind of wasting.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:I suggest you make Dimply.

well, first good luck finding the right sized tube and washers; second, be confident (or brave) enough to drill holes on a fine piece of art

I bought a indexable boring bar and respective carbide inserts.
Can it also be used for outside turning? As my understanding the only difference between the boring and turning bar it's the boring one has a round body instead of square. They are not cheap at all so I really hope it will work for both.
Will carbide inserts for cutting steel work for aluminium and brass? I see there are both types for ferrous and non-ferrous...
Also, witch type of dovetail milling cutter should I use to cut grooves for scope mount? These rails used on airguns I mean.
Thanks

Not sure which cutter you ought to use, but for what it's worth, the dovetail mounts on airguns are the same you'd find on firearms that have 'em (like 22's). My problem with them is that they are often cut poorly and are inconsistent. . I had the mount on one of my Marlin 795's adjusted because of that. I'll ask a gunsmith buddy of mine what he uses.

First I'd like to know the angle, 45º or 60º, then the range of cutting diameter(my mill only take 10mm shank cutters, so 12mm-16mm cutting diameter)

Message too short, so another question:
How exactly does a gas blow-back airsoft gun works? I didn't find anything about them

Semi auto, right?
If so... Probably the same way a gas blowback firearm works (most semi-auto .22LR guns). Was going to post a link to that, but for some reason on my phone I can't get to most sites but here!

Also full auto... I found some gas rifles actually delivers quite a bit of power so I'm curious about the mechanism, I mean I don't believe the gas used to fire the bb is strong enough to operate a hammer and bolt

Ah, understood. BTW, Dovetail is 60 degrees, Picatinny rails are 45 degrees. My friend added that not all dovetail rails are equal; some are 11mm or other metric sizes, most common are 3/8" though, and those are 60 degrees.

Thanks.
Got bored so I decided to make a mono core internal for my M4's suppressor.
Everything went smooth, also it's much better than the spring+sponge internal as the original I'm very proud of it
