Practical question - how to mate males & females

I am trying to put together my first pneumatic today. It is rather ad-hoc; there is not no big store here that has all the right parts. And i really have no practical plumbing experience.

Anyway, I have a RainRird 1" female female. I found this male brass fitting, that of course will screw into the ´bird. But, because there is a flange on it, it won´t go in all the way. The ´bird´s female socket is to deep that the flange goes against it.

I want to ask you guys w plumbing experience; will I need to (cut off the flange and) screw it in all the way to get a good result? Is it a must with a rubber disK?

- Or can I expect to get decent results with teflon tape on the threads (if I had some or could get it today I´d just try of course....)

- Or would it make any sense to try seal it where the flange meets the outer end of the female socket (with an O-ring or something)?


Or put shortly, MUST it be screwed in all the way and sealed w a disk?

actually i have always been raised never to use metals an plastic fittings together. on reason is there not made for it as you can see with the problem your having another is if you don't know what ur doing an you titten a metal fitting into a plastic one it could break. i dunno what everyone else is gonna say but i say find a 1 inch pvc male for ur sprinkler

Hi,

I got it solved with the help of a polyethylene plastic bag. I found out that it will do about the same trick on the threads as Teflon tape.

But it could be really great to have a "general decent plumbing how-to". Just like on valve mods, C:B ratios, solvent welding and what else.

Once I have learned all the don´ts I will happily write one..

The KY I can understand, but epoxy? I believe in "getting stuck in" but not literally

I can think of an enjoyable scenario using KY and epoxy in the capacity of lubricant and sealer as we do in spudguns that would prevent any sort of birth but as Pete rightly pointed out above it's beyond the scope of this discussion

It's never ideal to screw a male metal fitting into the socket of a plastic female fitting because it some cases it will split the female fitting. In your case you may be able to tighten the brass male fitting into the rainbird vavle until it is tight. You should use teflon tape on the joint but you dont have to use Pro-Dope or any other type of thread sealant. If you over tighten the brass fitting you run the risk of splitting the socket on the 'bird, so i would just tighten until you feel comfortable that it is sealed and if it leaks when you apply air to it, you can just tighten it some more.
