This outbreak really is bringing people back online
It would probably look like a ratchet mechanism on an ancient ballista. Doubtless an interesting project but on this scale pneumatics are so much more practical in terms of using off-the-shelf materials.

I like the idea of heating the air by compression in order to get around the sound barrier. That's kinda where I was going with it. I was also thinking that the energy efficiency would be higher than a pneumatic with a similar muzzle velocity. I think spring guns can get up to around 30% or so.
