sometimes typing people's user name/e-mail into google will help, but only sometimes.

Yea, google the handle, then search facebook and myspace for it. If all else fails, just block the person, it's not worth screwing with.

If you have a suspicion about who it is then you can find the IP of the mystery person and your suspect and see if they match up.
I think there are ways to get the IP through transferring files on AIM, or if you are web savvy you could probably set up a site that logs the IP of anyone that visits it, and get them to click on a link to the page.

Incorrect. All AIM conversations, file trasnfers, picture transfers, etc... go through the AIM proxy server these days; even with a packet sniffer, nmap, netstat, etc... you won't be finding anyone's IP over AIM.
This would work if you had the ability to set up a private FTP/web server and trick the person into logging into it, but you'll only get their real IP if they aren't using any proxy/anonymity software.clide wrote:or if you are web savvy you could probably set up a site that logs the IP of anyone that visits it, and get them to click on a link to the page.
Peace,

Well I don't use AIM, so thats why I said I think. I know at one point file transfers on AIM were done with a direct connection.Pete Zaria wrote: Incorrect. They wouldn't have to log in, a simple PHP script could log the IP of anybody who looks at the page. Of course like you said a proxy would get around that, but it could still result in a match to the suspect if he didn't change proxies. This would work if you had the ability to set up a private FTP/web server and trick the person into logging into it, but you'll only get their real IP if they aren't using any proxy/anonymity software.

If you can't just "block" them (suggesting they may be harassing you using various accounts), then you will need to contact your local authorities.

what does having like 20 im names have to do with this?
Simple. Act as if you are someone else, but knowing the actual situation it's not going to help any. (But yeah he did not have the benefit of knowing what the current situation is)
In truth the situation is a bit sticky, and what he wants I am not sure if any are qualified (not as if you have to be in this field) of such on this forum. A bit off the course of potato guns.

yeah, they are bots. usually AIM puts them in a different area than the rest of your buddies.DAltar wrote:this has happened to me, the screen names spleak, wsj, sharethisdotcom, prof gilzot, and IM street, all showed up on my buddy lists, they cannot be blocked, or deleted, im guessing they are bots
