make a cone shaped projectile that is split into three or four sections, each attached to a corner of the net.

Yup, a projectile that splits up would do the trick.
But how would you split em up?
By aerodynamics or maybe by spinning and centrifugal force?

You can have a cylindrical projectile split into four with a hollow front face, the segments will separate in the same way an APFSDS round does.

I like this! I have seen it on Mythbusters before but that was with 4 or 5 barrels. It would be cool if you would make this.

Ok, so I've been thinking of how this would work with a single barrel gun. I came up with one idea that ,with some tweaking, could work.

You take a tennis ball and cut a small, 1"? , Hole on one side. From that hole cut the ball into 4 slices so the hole is the center.

You will obviously need a sleeved barrel so the tennis ball fits tightly. Attach a net to each of the 4 slices of tennis ball and re assemble the tennis ball with the net inside. With a little wadding carefully insert the tennis ball into your barrel with the hole facing the exit. The hole in the top of the ball should be enough to separate the 4 slices and let them spread out. Mabye flare the end of your barrel?

I currently don't have a gun at school with me, but if someone could test this and let me know I would greatly appreciate it.

The spherical shape of a tennis ball wouldn't really force it to open out effectively, you'll probably get an affect that looks more like chain shot than a spread out net.

Anyway, The net guns i've seen fire a ,what looks to be, a lightweight net from a single barrel. The barrel is shaped like a cone. Any ideas of how the net spreads would be great.

Then the net would already start to spread out in the barrel,
Think that the sabot parts are hollow tail so they spread out and make a gap in the middle.

I'm not throwing out the possibility that these commercial net guns have a *very* small explosive charge (like the kind in a seatbelt) which deploys the net in all directions.

Have you ever seen the mythbusters episode with the pigeon experiment? They use a pretty effective multibarrel cannon using tennis balls tied around the edges of the net. It was more of a distraction on the show but it works.
