I'm not quite sure how I would get that to work as a firing mechanism though. What could I wire to the 12V battery (besides the fans) to cause a spark?

Stun guns use a 9V though I wouldn't want to buy it and disassemble it if I was just going to burn it out in 30 seconds lol.

well, are you going to be using them both at the same time? otherwise trash the stun gun idea....ever consider making an ignition system from a disposable camera flash circuit? Here's a good tutorial

Mmm.. Probably wont be using it at the same time. The disposable camera idea looks good as I read through it but somewhat complicated. Maybe I'll just stick with 9v and do a stungun and put 9v plugs on the fan(s) and wire it to a battery box with switches.

usually, for a regular pc fan, just 1 9v battery works well. no need for 2, just speeding up the "burning of the motor" process.

but yeah, thats what i would do, is run the separate things off of separate batteries, that way, there isn't any overkill of power and you don't end up wrecking anything.

It would still be fun to have the power of a fully charged 12V cell at ones disposal lol but yea I'll stick with 9V unless I can figure out some way to make the 12V work.

Btw will a spark jump between a gap with this or is the steel wool required?

no steel wool required, the ignition coil should create enough electricity to produce a hefty spark. if you use a car ignition coil, you could probably get a good 2-4" spark gap.
