copper rifling idea....

Thanx for all the replies and ideas guys. cdheller, I think yours is especially interesting, it is like button rifling, except the outside of the barrel would be changed also. I'm just not sure if I would be strong enough to pull the "button" through the pipe. Possibly if it only made a very minimal distortion.

Also since I posted this topic I have made and tried the jig I described in a 18" long piece of extra 1/2" I had. It was kinda hard to get it started so I ended up pulling it straight with no twist for the first few inches when it broke free, but after that I just tried to guess at a twist rate as I pulled it through.

Then I took one of the marbles I shoot and patched it with a greased t-shirt patch I normally use and pushed it through with my wooden dowel ramrod. I watched from the other end with a flashlight and the projectile actually followed the rifling. Working against the friction of the end of the dowel rod, since I wasn't turning the dowel as I pushed.

I found this to be quite promising. I wonder though, if it would work when the bullet is accelerating like crazy. I figure even if the bullet only takes on half the spin that the rifling is trying to impart it could only help things right?

other things of note are the fact that the "scratches" aren't exactly smooth, as they seem to be picking up a little tiny bit of fuzz off of the patch. I'm guessing that they would smooth out after a number of shots though.

nivekatoz, your idea is a great one as well, but I'm trying to be a cheap a%s here. also I would kinda like to stick to copper for aesthetic reasons.

spudfarm, very ingenuitive idea as well, but it sounds VERY tricky to pull off honestly. If you can get it to work though I bet you would have orders rolling in.

If this scratch idea ends up working really well, and increases accuracy markedly, I might be offering lengths of rifled 1/2" copper on the sight, but I don't want to get ahead of myself here.

I'll keep you filled in. What do you guys think about the results of my little test?
