Well i started with a ball valve launcher, without using primer, and used dwv.

Pneumatic - spring loaded ball valve, no safe parts at all.

No seriously, I started out with a springer of all things, and had thought up all sorts of massive scale-ups of the idea that looked like medieval siege engines - until I built my first pneumatic, I was captivated by the power of compressed air from then on, though I have dabbled briefly with fuel-air mixtures.

I might be in Spain, but you'll be amazed how many Eastern European imports can be found here not quite as far as Russia but I've met Romanian, Bulgarian and Polish, oh the adventures I've had... *sigh*

Nothing wrong with a well done springer... when I tried it of course, it wasn't well done, and it cost me a significant chunk of finger and it appears the debt has been paid back in scar tissue.
Lesson learned: Never take out any form of loan on your digits, the interest is atrocious, and it runs your credit history.

But I will vouch that Air Arms certainly do know what they're doing...

In fact, my TX has gone through a surprisingly large number of pellets, so I'm going to need to order in a job lot of them.
However, to make up for it's voracious appetite for lead, it has put in a decent show of work dealing with the rats in the garden.

I'm quite amazed by the number of people who started off with pneumatics. I started off with a good ol' fashioned spray-n-pray. In fact, that's still what I use (but now it has a laser sight ).

My first spudgun was a spray'n'pray combustion based loosely on plans from advancedspuds.com, which I built in the fall of '06. My first spudgun that was actually operable was my Oxy/MAPP Inject'N'Pray^TM (:roll:) combustion that I built in the spring of '07. After that, I actually gave up on spudding because I couldn't get anything to work, and I couldn't find any good sources of parts. I really didn't become dedicated to this hobby until I started to realise how powerful the SCTBDC was. After that, I got a lot more creative in finding and making parts.

So, in short, you can credit Noname's pathetic little 1.5" bore burst disk pneumatic mortar for being the inspiration behind some of the most beastly spudguns ever made.

In the modern era, a basic PVC spray and pray, Aquanet hair spray, 4" chamber, 2" intermediate chamber... , and 1" barrel, all told about 5' long. Shot wooden dowel slugs, about 150 yrd range...1995 timeframe.

Very fancy, but a lot more money than I would spend... if I were to be blowing over £1000 on an air rifle, that wouldn't be my choice.

Besides, after the attempt HEAL had at ripping off my arm a couple of weeks back*, you realise that complaining about the tiny kick from a basic springer is kind of moot - a consistent hold is all it needs.

*Firing rounds of 20mm steel rod at high pressure has a bit of a kick... But you should have seen how far my backstop flew!

I agree that springers can be more satisfying to shoot, since it's a challenge, and they have other things going for them as well, such as the advantage of being self contained - this means lower financial outlay to begin with, plus many a time I take my '97K to the range purely to avoid having to lug the SCUBA tank around.

A friend of mine has a Whiscombe in his collection, it's not much heavier than a conventional springer and absolutely zero recoil - it is prohibitively expensive, but what you get for your money is a true work of art, very much the best of both worlds - though not a multishot, of course.
